Metallics J1401 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What screw size do Metallics J1401 lead anchors take?
The Metallics J1401 lead anchors are sized for 6-32 machine screws. They're the lead sleeve only, so you supply the 6-32 machine screws separately in whatever length suits your fixture and base material depth.
2) Can I use lead machine screw anchors in concrete, block, and brick?
Lead machine screw anchors like the J1401 are made for solid masonry: poured concrete, brick, and solid block. You drill the hole, drop the lead sleeve in, and the machine screw expands the lead against the hole wall. They are not for hollow block webs, drywall, or hollow tile, where the sleeve has nothing to expand against. Use a toggle or hollow wall anchor there instead.
3) Do the machine screws come with the J1401 lead anchors?
No. The jar holds the lead anchor sleeves only. Order 6-32 machine screws separately, and pick the length by adding the thickness of the item you are fastening to the depth the anchor sits at. Screws that bottom out before the anchor expands will not set properly.
4) How many anchors come in a jar of Metallics J1401?
One hundred lead machine screw anchors per jar. The jar pack is how Metallics sells these, so an electrician stocking a van or a maintenance shop restocking a fastener bin buys them in hundreds rather than loose counts.
5) Should I use a lead machine screw anchor or a plastic expansion anchor?
Lead sets harder and holds better than plastic in concrete, and because it takes a standard 6-32 machine screw, the fixture can be removed and reinstalled on the same anchor without chewing out the hole. Plastic anchors take a tapered sheet metal screw and are generally one-shot. For removable or serviceable mounts in masonry, the lead anchor is the one to use.
