1) Will a 3/8 inch toggle bolt work in standard 1/2 inch drywall, or is it too big?
Spring wing toggles are made for hollow wall, and the Metallics J1520 is a 3/8 inch by 4 inch toggle for drywall, plasterboard, and hollow masonry. Size does not mean the wall has to be thick, it means the hole has to be big enough for the folded wings to pass through, and a 3/8 inch toggle needs a large hole (roughly 7/8 inch) in the face of the board. That is fine in drywall, but two things decide it: there has to be open cavity behind the wall for the wings to spring out, and the load hangs off the face of the board. If you drill and hit a stud, blocking, or insulation packed tight, the wings will not deploy and the anchor is useless in that hole.
2) Can you remove a toggle bolt later and reuse it?
No, and this is the tradeoff with any spring wing toggle including the Metallics J1520. Back the bolt out and the wing assembly drops loose into the wall cavity, gone. You are left with a large open hole to patch. For anything you expect to service or take down and rehang, a threaded self drilling drywall anchor or a hollow wall anchor that stays captive in the board is the better call. Use the toggle where the mount is permanent and the load matters more than serviceability.
3) Is a spring wing toggle strong enough to hang an electrical box or conduit support on drywall?
That is the intended use. The wings sit flat against the back of the board and spread the load over a wide area instead of pinching a small collar of drywall, which is why toggles carry more than a plastic expansion anchor in the same wall. The Metallics J1520 is called out for mounting electrical boxes, conduit supports, and panel accessories, plus ductwork brackets, pipe supports, and shelving. Judgment still applies: the anchor is only as good as the board it pulls against, so a wide load on old or water damaged gypsum needs blocking or a through bolt to structure, not a bigger toggle.
4) Is a toggle bolt the right anchor for solid concrete or block, or do I need something else?
Wrong tool for solid material. A spring wing toggle needs an open cavity behind the wall for the wings to swing out, so it works in drywall, plasterboard, and hollow masonry only. Drill into poured concrete, solid brick, or grouted block and there is nothing for the wings to open into. For those substrates you want a mechanical expansion anchor, a sleeve anchor, or a screw anchor rated for concrete, in a diameter matched to the load.
5) How do you install a spring wing toggle so the wings actually open?
Order matters, and getting it backwards is the usual failure. Thread the bolt through your fixture or bracket FIRST, then thread the toggle onto the end of the bolt, pinch the wings flat along the bolt, and push the whole assembly through the hole until you feel the wings snap open in the cavity. Pull back toward you to seat the wings against the inside face of the board, then tighten. If you run the bolt in before the fixture is on it, you have to take the whole thing apart or lose the toggle in the wall.
6) How much clearance do I need behind the wall for a 3/8 inch toggle bolt?
The wings on a 3/8 inch toggle are long, and they have to rotate fully open once they are through the board, so you need several inches of free cavity depth and no obstruction directly behind the hole. That rules out a lot of real openings: a shallow furred out wall, a cavity full of wiring or blocking, or the back of a cabinet gable. Check the cavity with a bent wire or a bit of stiff rod through the pilot hole before you commit, because once the wings are in and they cannot open, the only recovery is a bigger hole.
7) What drive does the Metallics J1520 toggle bolt take, a flat blade or a Phillips?
