Arlington Industries 149 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What conduit sizes does the Arlington clamp-on entrance cap come in?
Arlington's aluminum clamp-on entrance cap is made in five trade sizes: 1-1/2 inch (part 144), 2 inch (145), 2-1/2 inch (146), 3 inch (147) and 4 inch (149). Order by the trade size of the mast or conduit you are capping, not by the outside diameter of the pipe. Sizes 1-1/2 and 2 inch cover most residential overhead services; 2-1/2 through 4 inch are the sizes that show up on commercial risers and larger multi-family service masts.
2) Will an Arlington clamp-on entrance cap fit EMT, or do I need threaded rigid conduit?
It fits both. The clamp-on design grips the outside of the conduit instead of threading onto it, so the same cap works on rigid, IMC and EMT of the matching trade size. That is the practical reason to pick a clamp-on over a threaded service head: EMT has no threads to take a threaded cap, and on a cut length of rigid you would otherwise have to field-thread the end. Match the trade size and you are done.
3) Is the Arlington entrance cap UL listed for a service mast inspection?
Both UL and CSA Listed. That matters on a service entrance because the inspector is looking for a listed weatherhead on the mast, and the CSA side means the same part number is acceptable on Canadian jobs without sourcing a separate SKU.
4) Is an aluminum entrance cap OK outdoors in a coastal or industrial environment?
Aluminum is the body material here, which is why it is the standard choice for an exposed weatherhead sitting on a mast in the weather year round. It does not rust the way a plated steel fitting will once the coating gets scratched during install. The silver finish is the mill aluminum itself, so there is no paint layer to fail.
5) What is the difference between a clamp-on entrance cap and a threaded service head?
A threaded weatherhead screws onto the threaded end of rigid or IMC and can only go on threaded pipe. A clamp-on cap like this Arlington aluminum cap slips over the conduit and clamps to the outside, so it works on rigid, IMC and EMT alike, and on cut ends with no threads. Choose threaded when you have a factory-threaded rigid riser and want the mechanical connection; choose clamp-on when the run is EMT, when the pipe was cut in the field, or when you are replacing a head on an existing mast and do not want to pull and rethread the conduit.
6) Can I replace an existing weatherhead on a 2 inch mast without taking down the conduit?
That is what the clamp-on style is for. Because the cap clamps to the outside of the pipe rather than threading on, a 2 inch mast takes the 145 and you are working only at the top of the riser. Confirm the trade size of the existing mast first, since the cap is sized per pipe and does not adjust between sizes.
7) I am standardizing weatherheads across a portfolio of buildings. Can I stay on one Arlington part family for every mast size?
Yes, one family covers it. Parts 144 through 149 span 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch in the same aluminum clamp-on design, all UL and CSA Listed, so a maintenance shop can stock the sizes it actually sees and treat them as one line item. Because every size handles rigid, IMC and EMT, you do not need a separate threaded and non-threaded version of each size.
8) Does the Arlington entrance cap keep rain out of the conduit on its own?
The cap is the weatherproof termination for the top of the run: it turns the conductors downward and seals the opening against rain and debris entering the conduit. It does not seal the conductors themselves. The service drop conductors still need a drip loop below the head so water runs off before it reaches the entry point, and the mast below still needs its own fittings and straps.
9) Do I need anything else besides the entrance cap to finish a conduit mast?
The cap covers the top of the mast only. The rest of the assembly, the conduit itself, the mast strap or roof flashing, the couplings and any connectors at the meter enclosure, are separate items, and this fitting includes no conduit or mounting hardware for the mast. What it does save you is thread prep, since the clamp-on body attaches to plain rigid, IMC or EMT.
