Arlington Industries AST Series Tool-Free MC Cable Connector

The Arlington Industries AST Series delivers fast, reliable termination for metal-clad and armored cable without tools. Zinc die-cast construction, a 1/2" knockout fit, and cULus/CSA listings make these connectors a go-to for commercial and industrial rough-in work. Six variants cover the full range of MC, AC, HCF, MCI-A, and flexible metal conduit cable types across two OD ranges — select the right one for your cable spec below.

Cable Type & OD Range — Variant Selection Guide

  • 38AST / 380AST: MC/HCF/AC Steel & Aluminum and AC90/ACG90 — cable OD .405 to .605"

Arlington Industries 4040AST – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which Arlington AST connector do I need for MC cable with a .485 to .610 inch outside diameter?
Two AST models cover the .485 to .610 inch OD band. For MC, HCF, or AC steel and aluminum cable, use the 40AST. For MCI-A aluminum, use the 400AST. If your cable is AC90/ACG90 or 3/8 inch flexible metal conduit in that same OD range, the 4040AST is the one. Measure the cable OD over the armor before you pick, because the .405 to .605 models will not lock correctly on a fatter cable.
2) Will an Arlington AST connector fit a standard 1/2 inch knockout on a junction box?
Yes. The AST connectors are built for a 1/2 inch knockout, which is the common KO on steel device boxes, panels, and enclosures. The connector presses into the KO by hand and locks, so there is no locknut to reach into the box and start. The cable side is 3/8 inch trade size.
3) Do I need a screwdriver or locknut to install an Arlington AST MC connector?
No tools and no locknut. The AST is a snap-in design: the cable pushes into the back of the connector and locks, and the connector body pushes into the 1/2 inch box knockout and locks there. On a high-count rough-in that is the whole reason to buy this style over a screw-clamp connector, which needs a screwdriver at the cable and a locknut inside the box.
4) Can I use an Arlington AST connector outdoors or in a wet location?
No. The AST is marked DRY ONLY on the connector body, so keep it to dry indoor locations, interior walls, ceilings, and dry panel or enclosure entries. For a damp or wet entry you need a listed watertight or raintight MC/flex fitting instead.
5) Are Arlington AST cable connectors approved for use in Canada as well as the US?
Both. The AST connectors carry cULus and CSA listings, so they satisfy NEC work in the US and Canadian Electrical Code work north of the border. That matters if you are a contractor or MRO buyer standardizing one part number across facilities in both countries.
6) Does the Arlington AST connector come with an anti-short bushing?
Yes, the red anti-short bushing is built into the connector, visible inside the barrel. That means no separate red-head to fish out of a bag and slide onto the armor before you terminate. You supply the cable, the connector supplies the bushing.
7) Can one Arlington AST connector handle both MC cable and 3/8 inch flexible metal conduit?
Only in one case. The 4040AST is listed for AC90/ACG90 and 3/8 inch flexible metal conduit together, in the .485 to .610 inch range. Otherwise the flex-rated part is separate: the 3838AST is the flex connector in the .405 to .605 range, while the 38AST and 40AST are the MC/HCF/AC models. If a job mixes MC homeruns with flex whips, expect to stock two part numbers, not one.
8) I am replacing old screw-type MC connectors in a building. Will an Arlington AST drop into the same box knockout?
If the existing fitting sits in a 1/2 inch knockout, the AST goes into the same hole. It is a 1/2 inch KO connector with a 3/8 inch trade size cable entry, the same combination the standard screw-clamp MC connector uses. The difference on the retrofit is that you will not be reinstalling a locknut, and you should confirm the cable OD falls in either the .405 to .605 or .485 to .610 band so you order the right model.
9) Is the Arlington 400AST the same as the 40AST?
They are different part numbers for different cable. Both cover the .485 to .610 inch OD band, but the 400AST is the MCI-A aluminum model and the 40AST is for MC, HCF, and AC steel and aluminum. Order by the cable type on your spec, not by the OD alone. The same pattern runs through the smaller band, where 38AST is MC/HCF/AC and 380AST is AC90/ACG90.
10) Is the Arlington AST connector metal or plastic, and will it hold up in an industrial panel?
Zinc die-cast body with a silver finish, not plastic. Zinc die-cast is corrosion resistant and holds its dimensions under mechanical load, which is why it is the usual body material on commercial and industrial cable connectors. It is made in the United States.
