These are new-work boxes. They mount to the joist while the ceiling framing is open, before drywall goes up, so they suit new construction and gut renovations. For a retrofit into an existing finished ceiling where you are working through a cut hole, you need an old-work fan-rated box or a retrofit brace bar instead.
2) What does the S suffix mean on the Arlington FBS415S and FBS420S fan boxes?
The S versions come with a side mounting bracket. FBS415S is the 1-1/2 inch deep box with the bracket and FBS420S is the 2 inch deep box with the bracket. The plain FBS415 and FBS420 have no bracket. Order the bracketed version when you are fastening to the side face of a joist and want the box positioned off the joist face; order the plain box when you are mounting directly without a bracket.
3) Will a 4-1/4 inch octagonal fan box work with a standard ceiling fan canopy?
The FBS4 box is 4.25 inches wide, which is the common octagonal ceiling box size, and ceiling fan and fixture canopies are built to cover a box of that size. Fan mounting brackets land on the two threaded ears in the box rather than on the box perimeter, so canopy coverage is the only clearance issue and 4.25 inches sits under a standard canopy.
4) Are Arlington FBS4 fan boxes sold individually or by the case?
