B-LINE B24-120 SS6 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will type 316 stainless strut hold up in a coastal or wash-down area?
Yes. The SS6 suffix on the B24-120 means the channel is stainless steel type 316, which is the marine and chemical grade of stainless, chosen for chloride exposure such as salt air, pool rooms, food processing wash-down and wastewater plants. If the run is indoors and dry, pre-galvanized or plain steel channel is the cheaper spec and does the same structural job.
2) What size strut nuts, straps and fittings fit B24 channel?
B24 uses the standard 1-5/8 inch strut profile (the channel measures 1.62 inches across the open face), so ordinary 1-5/8 inch channel nuts, spring nuts, beam clamps, pipe clamps and angle fittings drop straight in. For a 316 stainless run, order the nuts and fittings in 316 stainless too. Mixing plated steel hardware into a stainless channel in a wet or salty environment sets up galvanic corrosion at every connection point.
3) Is 14 gauge B24 the heavy channel or the light one?
14 gauge is the light-duty thickness in the strut family. It handles conduit racks, cable tray, small pipe and equipment mounting, and it cuts and drills easily on site. For long spans or heavy mechanical trapezes, step up to 12 gauge channel or a back-to-back welded combination. The B24-120 SS6 is a 14 gauge, 1.62 by 1.62 inch section.
4) Can I cut B24-120 stainless strut to length on the job?
Yes. The 120 inch stick is meant to be field cut, and 14 gauge stainless cuts cleanly with a bandsaw or an abrasive chop saw. Two things matter with 316: use a blade or wheel that has not been used on carbon steel, or you will embed iron particles that rust and look like the stainless failed, and coat or touch up nothing with plated hardware. File the cut ends and keep stainless fasteners at every connection.
