B-LINE BQL340 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the B-Line BQL340 breaker fit a plug-in panel, or does it have to be a bolt-on panelboard?
The BQL340 is a bolt-on breaker, so it mounts with screws to the bus of a panelboard prepped for BQL bolt-on breakers. It will not snap into a plug-in loadcenter bus. If your panel interior takes plug-on breakers, this is the wrong mounting style for that opening.
2) What wire size can I land on a 40A three-pole BQL breaker?
The lugs on the BQL340 accept #14 through #8 AWG copper or aluminum conductors. At a 40A rating you are typically landing #8 Cu, which is at the top of that range, so verify your conductor size before you strip it.
3) Is a 10 kAIC interrupting rating enough for my panel?
The BQL340 is rated 10 kAIC at 120/240 Vac. That covers most residential and light commercial services, but if your available fault current at the panel exceeds 10 kA, or your drawing calls for a 22 kAIC or higher series rating, this breaker does not meet the spec. Check the fault current study or the panel label first.
4) Can I use this three-pole 40A breaker on a 208V or 240V three-phase circuit?
The BQL340 is rated 120/240 V, and it is a three-pole device. A 120/240 V rating is a single-phase system rating, so it should not be applied to a 208Y/120 or 240 V three-phase panel unless the breaker carries a rating for that system. For three-phase feeders, specify a breaker rated for the phase-to-phase voltage of your system.
5) I need to replace a failed breaker in an older panelboard. Is the BQL340 a direct replacement?
BQL is a classic replacement type breaker, built to go back into panelboards that were originally fitted with BQL bolt-on breakers. Match three things off the old breaker: the BQL type marking, the three-pole configuration, and the 40A rating. If the existing breaker is a different type designation, the bus prep will not match and you need that type instead.
6) Can I put this breaker on an air conditioner or heat pump circuit?
Yes. The BQL340 is HACR rated, which means it is acceptable for use as the branch circuit protective device on heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment where the nameplate calls for an HACR type breaker. Size it to the equipment nameplate maximum overcurrent protection, not just the FLA.
7) What is the exact part number to order for a 40 amp three-pole BQL bolt-on breaker?
Order B-Line part number BQL340. The 3 indicates three poles and the 40 the amperage, so a two-pole 40A in the same family carries a different number. Keeping the full MPN on the purchase order avoids getting a single-pole shipped for a three-phase slot.
8) How much space does a BQL340 take up in the panel?
The breaker measures 5 in deep by 3 in high by 3 in wide and weighs about half a pound. Three-pole bolt-on breakers occupy three pole spaces on the bus, so confirm you have three adjacent open spaces in the interior before ordering.
