The finish is mill-galvanized steel, which is zinc coating applied to the coil before forming. That means the sheared and punched edges are bare steel and will show rust in wet or corrosive service. It suits dry interior plant stairs and covered exterior stairs; for constant wash-down, coastal, or chemical exposure, specify a hot-dip galvanized-after-fabrication or stainless version of the same tread profile instead.

The tread is formed from 14 gauge steel with a 1.5 inch deep channel. The 1.5 inch depth is what carries the load between stair stringers, not the sheet thickness alone, so the deeper channel gives more span capacity than a flat plank of the same gauge. Set your stringer spacing to the load the stair is being designed for and support both ends of each cut length.

It is sold as stair tread, 7 inches wide with a 1.5 inch channel. Because it arrives in a 360 inch length you can cut it for short walkway runs or ladder landings, but a 7 inch width means multiple pieces side by side to make up a platform, and each piece still needs support at both ends. For full platforms, wider grating planks in the same Grip Strut profile are the cleaner buy.
