B-LINE B52SH-120GLV – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the B-Line B52 strut channel a half-height 13/16 inch channel or the full 1-5/8 inch deep type?
B52 is the shallow one. The channel measures .81 in high by 1.62 in wide, so it's the half-height profile with a standard 1-5/8 inch opening face. Strut nuts, clamps and fittings size to that 1-5/8 inch face, so hardware sized for standard strut still seats. Use it where you need the strut width but not the depth, such as tight ceiling plenums or against a wall. If you need the load capacity of the deeper section, you want a full 1-5/8 x 1-5/8 channel instead.
2) What does the SH hole pattern mean on B-Line strut channel?
SH is the slotted hole pattern punched through the back of the channel, as opposed to a solid (unpunched) back. It lets you through-bolt the strut to structure, threaded rod, or a wall anywhere along the run without drilling on site, and the slots give you adjustment for lining up a run. If you would rather have a continuous unpunched back, order the same B52 channel in the solid-back version instead.
3) Can pre-galvanized strut channel be used outdoors?
Pre-galvanized (electro-galvanized) steel strut is a dry indoor and protected-area finish. The zinc goes on the coil before roll forming, so the cut ends and the punched slots are left bare and will rust once they are wet. Keep it to indoor mechanical rooms, ceilings and interior walls. For exterior, wash-down, or corrosive areas, specify a hot-dip galvanized or stainless channel instead.
4) Will standard strut nuts and pipe clamps fit the B-Line B52 channel?
Yes. The open face is 1.62 in wide, the standard 1-5/8 inch strut opening, so 1-5/8 inch spring nuts, channel nuts, conduit straps and pipe clamps engage the lips normally. What changes with the half-height section is depth, not the face, so long-body hardware meant to sit inside a deep channel may bottom out.
5) What exact part number do I order to match existing B-Line half-height slotted strut in my building?
The part number is B52SH-120GLV: B52 half-height channel, SH slotted hole pattern, 120 inch length, pre-galvanized finish. If the strut already on your racks is stamped B52 with slotted backs and a bright zinc finish, this is the same section and the fittings you already stock will carry over.
