Baldwin 0509 A Straight Transitional Threaded Spindle

The 0509 A is the threaded spindle only, the square bar that runs through the door and ties the two lever handles to the latch mechanism so turning one side retracts the latch. No lever, rose, or latch comes with it. It is a Baldwin Estate Series part, sold in a straight transitional profile, and it is the piece you order when the levers themselves are fine but the connecting bar is stripped, bent, or the wrong length for the door.

Four lengths: 3 inch, 4 inch, 4-1/2 inch, and 5 inch. Length is the one thing you have to get right, since it has to span the door thickness plus both roses and still leave enough thread engaged in each lever. Measure the existing spindle end to end before ordering, or measure your door thickness and add the depth of the trim on both faces. A spindle that is too short will not engage the second lever; too long and the levers stand proud of the roses.

A straight spindle has no handing. It is a symmetrical bar that passes through the door, so the same part works on a left hand or right hand opening and on an inswing or outswing door. Handing on a lever set lives in the lever and the latch, not in the spindle.

Baldwin lists the 0509 A as a residential part, so it belongs on interior and entry doors in homes, condo units, and light-traffic settings, not on a commercial corridor or a stairwell door running thousands of cycles a week. Property managers replacing spindles in unit doors are in the right place; anyone repairing a Grade 1 commercial lever should be sourcing the manufacturer's own commercial spindle for that lockset instead.

The spindle ships on its own, so you reuse the existing levers, roses, latch, and screws. Threaded spindles are secured by set screws in the lever hubs, so have the right hex key on hand and check that the set screws and the threads in your levers are intact. If a lever hub itself is stripped, a new spindle will not hold it.

Electro plated steel, Baldwin finish code 004. It is a plated steel bar rather than a decorative finish, which is fine because the spindle is concealed inside the door and behind the roses once the trim is mounted. You do not need to match it to the lever finish.
