Baldwin 0522 A Swivel Transitional Threaded Spindle

The 0522 A is a threaded swivel spindle for Baldwin Estate Series lever trim. It's the bar that passes through the door and carries the turning motion from the lever on one side to the latch mechanism, threaded so the lever screws onto it. It's a replacement part, not a complete lockset, so it comes with no lever, no rose, and no latch.

Four lengths are offered: 3-1/2, 4, 5-1/2 and 6-1/2 inches. Spindle length follows door thickness plus the depth of the trim on both faces, so a standard 1-3/4 inch door with a normal rose usually takes one of the shorter spindles, while thick doors or deep trim need the 5-1/2 or 6-1/2. Measure the old spindle end to end before ordering, or measure your door thickness and add the projection of the roses on both sides.

It's built for Baldwin Estate Series transitional lever trim, and Baldwin lists it against model 0509 A. It's threaded, so the lever must be a Baldwin threaded-spindle lever from that family. A Baldwin Reserve or Prestige lever, or any other brand's lever, uses different trim engineering and won't be a match. Pull your existing spindle and confirm it's threaded before ordering.

Often yes. A swivel spindle wears at the threads and at the swivel joint, and once there's play the lever sits low and doesn't return cleanly. Swapping in a fresh 0522 A alloy steel spindle of the same length is the standard repair, and it saves replacing the whole Estate Series lever set. Note it is only the spindle, so if the latch itself is what's failing to retract, the spindle won't cure it.

Residential. Baldwin classifies the 0522 A spindle under its residential Estate Series lever trim, so it's the right part for single-family and light multi-family door hardware, not for a Grade 1 commercial lever on a high-traffic corridor or stairwell. For a commercial opening, you want the manufacturer's own trim parts for that commercial lockset series instead.

Alloy steel with an electro plated steel finish. That's a structural spindle rather than a cast zinc one, which matters because the spindle takes the full torque every time someone pushes the lever down. The plating is a corrosion coating on a concealed part, so it isn't a decorative finish you match to your lever, and it has no bearing on the visible trim's finish.

Only if the doors are the same thickness with the same trim. The 0522 A is sold in four discrete lengths (3-1/2, 4, 5-1/2, 6-1/2 inches), and a spindle cut for a thin interior door won't reach through a thicker entry door. Property managers standardizing a building are usually buying two lengths, not one: measure a sample of each door type first, then order per group.

Just the spindle. It's a single replacement component of the lever trim, so the lever, rose, roses' mounting posts and the latch are all separate. If you're rebuilding an Estate Series lever that's failed in more than one place, order the matching trim parts alongside it rather than expecting a kit.
