Baldwin 5165056RMR – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Baldwin 5165 lever come with a rose, or do I have to order that separately?
The rose is not included. The 5165 Estate lever is sold as trim only, and the 5046 round rose is ordered separately. Baldwin's Estate program is built so you mix and match levers, knobs and roses to build passage, privacy, full dummy or half dummy sets, or to trim out a mortise lock with handle set trim or an escutcheon plate. Budget for the rose and the appropriate lock body on every opening.
2) Will the Baldwin 5165 lever work on a 1-3/8 inch interior door?
Yes. The 5165 covers doors from 1-3/8 inch up to a maximum of 1-3/4 inch, which spans both the common older interior slab and standard modern door thickness. Anything thicker than 1-3/4 is outside the range.
3) Do I need to specify left hand or right hand when ordering the Baldwin 5165 lever?
The lever itself is reversible, so it is not handed in the sense of needing a hand-specific part for a standard pair. Handing only comes into play if you are buying halves: the ordering choices are Half Pair Left Hand, Half Pair Right Hand, Pair, or Pair (PINNED). Buy a full Pair for a normal two-sided opening, and a Half Pair when you are trimming one face only, for example a half dummy on a closet or a single-side application.
4) Is the Baldwin 5165 lever suitable for a commercial building or an apartment turn?
Baldwin lists the 5165 as a residential product, and the described use is interior passage, privacy and dummy sets in a home. For a high-traffic commercial opening or a code-driven facility spec, you want a Grade 1 or Grade 2 commercial lockset instead. For high-end single-family, condo, or a boutique multi-family unit interior, the 5165 is in the right category.
5) What backset does the Baldwin 5165 lever need in the door?
It is set up for a 2-3/8 inch backset, which is the common residential interior bore. If your existing doors are drilled at 2-3/4 inch, the cross bore location will not line up without a different lock body, so check the existing prep before ordering a set for a retrofit.
6) Is the Imperial USA TH1100 lever a substitute for the Baldwin 5165 Estate lever?
They are not interchangeable in the same way. The Baldwin 5165 lever is reversible, so one lever handles either door hand, and it can be bought as a pair, a pair (pinned), or as a half pair specified left hand or right hand. The Imperial USA TH1100 Series lever handle is ordered as a handed item, with the left hand specified as its own part. If you are matching an existing Baldwin Estate trim set or planning to mix the lever with a separate Baldwin rose, stay with the 5165; the TH1100 is a different series and will not share the Estate rose interface.
7) What looks like a match for the Baldwin 5165 lever but will not work with my existing rose?
Any lever from a different manufacturer series. The Baldwin 5165 Estate lever is designed to mix and match with Baldwin roses and escutcheons - it ships without the rose, which is ordered separately - so the spindle and rose interface is Baldwin-specific. An Imperial USA TH1100 Series lever is a separate series and will not mount to a Baldwin 5046 rose. If you already have Baldwin roses on the doors and only the levers are worn, order the 5165 lever alone in the matching finish.
8) How far does the Baldwin 5165 lever stick out from the door, and how long is the grip?
Projection off the door face is 2.5 inches, with a 4.58 inch lever grip length. Those two numbers are what to check against a door that swings into a narrow hall, a return wall, or an adjacent door or cabinet, and against the clearance you need behind the lever for a gloved hand.
9) What finishes does the Baldwin 5165 Estate lever come in, and can I match it across a whole house?
Fourteen finishes: Polished Brass, Non-Lacquered Brass, Vintage Brass, Satin Brass, Satin Brass and Black, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Satin Brass and Brown, Graphite Nickel, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Venetian Bronze, Satin Black, Polished Chrome, and Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze. Because the lever and rose are ordered separately in the same Estate finish range, you can carry one finish through every interior door and still vary the rose shape room to room. Note the living finishes, Non-Lacquered Brass and Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze, are meant to change with handling, so they will not stay uniform across a house the way Satin Nickel or Polished Chrome will.
10) I only need to replace one lever on a single door - do I have to buy a pair?
No. The Baldwin 5165 Estate lever is offered as a half pair in left hand or right hand, so a single-side replacement is a one-part order. The Imperial USA TH1100 Series lever is likewise sold as a handed single, with a left hand part in the series. The difference is that the 5165 lever itself is reversible and the half pair designation refers to which side of the door it ships for, so confirm the side before ordering.
11) What is the difference between the Pair and the Pair (PINNED) option on the Baldwin 5165?
Both give you two levers for a two-sided opening. The PINNED version is the option to order when the application calls for the lever to be pinned to the spindle rather than left as a standard pair assembly. If you are building a standard interior passage or privacy set, the plain Pair is the normal selection.
12) What is the Baldwin 5165 lever actually made of?
Solid brass. The plated finishes are built on that brass body, for example Polished Nickel is nickel-plated brass with a high gloss, and Lifetime Satin Nickel is a matte PVD nickel plating over solid brass. That is why these levers have noticeably more heft than a cast zinc residential lever.
