Baldwin 6039190R158 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Baldwin 6039 strike work with a 2-3/8 inch backset deadbolt?
No. The 6039 extended lip ASA strike is built for 2-3/4 inch backset latches and deadbolts only. On a 2-3/8 inch backset lock the bolt lands in a different spot relative to the frame face, so the extended lip geometry won't line up. If your deadbolt is a 2-3/8 inch backset, you need the strike matched to that backset instead.
2) What is an extended lip strike for, and do I need one instead of a standard ASA strike?
An extended lip strike is what you reach for when the door or frame condition pushes the jamb face away from where a normal strike lip would end. The Baldwin 6039 is meant for locks installed on special door or frame conditions, such as a thick trim, a deep reveal, or a frame that leaves the bolt unsupported past a standard lip. The longer lip carries the bolt across that gap and protects the casing. On a normal flush jamb with a standard reveal, a standard ASA strike does the job and the 6039 is more strike than you need.
3) What lip-to-center dimension should I order on the Baldwin 6039 strike?
Two lip-to-center sizes are offered, 1-5/8 inch and 1-7/8 inch. Measure from the centerline of the strike opening out to where the lip has to end, which is governed by how far your door face and any applied trim sit from the jamb rabbet. Deeper reveals or thicker casing take the 1-7/8 inch. Get this one wrong and the lip either stops short of the door face or stands proud of the trim.
4) Does the Baldwin 6039 ASA strike need to be handed?
Handing matters here. Because the lip extends to one side of the strike opening, the 6039 is ordered left hand or right hand and both are available. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left, it is a left hand door. Order the strike to match the door, not the wall.
5) Will the Baldwin 6039 fit an existing ASA strike cutout in my frame?
The 6039 is a full ASA strike measuring 1-7/8 by 4-7/8 inches, which is the standard ASA (also called T-strike or 4-7/8) frame prep. If your hollow metal or wood frame is already prepped for a 4-7/8 inch ASA strike, this drops into that same mortise and the only change is the longer lip projecting past the jamb face.
6) Can I get the Baldwin 6039 with a flat or square lip instead of a curved one?
No, it comes with a curved lip only, in both the 1-5/8 and 1-7/8 inch lip-to-center sizes. If your detail calls for a flat or square-return lip, this is not the part.
7) What finishes does the Baldwin 6039 strike come in, and will it match my Estate Series lockset?
Three finishes: 003 Polished Brass PVD, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, and 190 Satin Black. It is an Estate Series part, so those codes are the same Baldwin finish numbers used across the Estate line, and a 102 strike matches a 102 lock. All three are offered in both handings and both lip sizes.
8) I have a Baldwin deadbolt and a separate latch on the same door. Does the 6039 cover both?
One strike, one bolt. The 6039 is specified for the deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset installation, not as a combined latch-and-deadbolt strike. If both your latch and your deadbolt sit at 2-3/4 inch backset and both need extended lips, order a strike for each opening in the frame.
9) Is the Baldwin 6039 strike solid brass, and how does it hold up in an exterior entry door?
Brass is the substrate. On a front entry it is doing the same job as the rest of the Estate Series trim, and the finish codes are shared with that line so it ages alongside the lockset rather than against it. Baldwin classes it as residential hardware, so for a high-traffic commercial opening you would specify a commercial-grade strike instead.
