Baldwin 5162003RMR – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the Pair, Half Pair and Pair (PINNED) options on the Baldwin 5162 lever?
Four ordering choices on the 5162. A Pair gives you both levers for a door that needs a handle on each side, passage or privacy. A Half Pair is a single lever, ordered left hand or right hand, and that is what you want for a dummy application on one face only or to replace one damaged lever. Pair (PINNED) is the pinned version of the pair. On the half pair you must state the hand, because a lever is handed and a left hand lever will point the wrong way on a right hand door.
2) How do I know whether to order the left hand or right hand Baldwin 5162 lever?
Stand on the outside of the door, the side you push from. If the hinges are on your left it is a left hand door, hinges on the right is a right hand door, and the lever should point toward the latch, away from the hinges. The 5162 half pair is ordered specifically as Half Pair, Left Hand or Half Pair, Right Hand. If you are ordering the full Pair, handing is already covered.
3) Is the Baldwin Estate 5162 lever rated for commercial use?
The 5162 Estate lever is a residential product. For an office suite door, a common corridor in a multi-family building, or anything on a facility standardization program, it is the wrong choice, and you should be looking at commercial grade lever trim on a Grade 1 or Grade 2 lockset instead. Where the 5162 earns its place is a high-end residential interior or a model unit where the finish and the brass feel matter more than cycle counts.
4) What is a left-hand lever alternative to the Baldwin Estate 5162?
The Baldwin Estate 5162 lever is sold in a Half Pair, Left Hand configuration for openings that need a single handed lever rather than a pair, and it is offered in 15 finishes including 003 Polished Brass PVD, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 190 Satin Black and 260 Polished Chrome. If a different handed lever is wanted for the same left-hand opening, the Imperial USA TH1100 Series lever handle is also built as a left-hand unit. The Baldwin 5162 ships without a rose or escutcheon, so the rose is ordered alongside it and can be selected to match the rest of the trim.
5) What finishes does the Baldwin Estate 5162 lever come in?
Fifteen finishes on the 5162, which is what makes it workable when you are matching existing hardware rather than starting fresh: 003 Polished Brass PVD, 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 033 Vintage Brass, 044 Satin Brass PVD, 050 Satin Brass Black, 055 Polished Nickel PVD, 056 Lifetime PVD Satin Nickel, 060 Satin Brass Brown, 076 Lifetime PVD Graphite Nickel, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 112 Venetian Bronze, 151 Antique Nickel, 190 Satin Black, 260 Polished Chrome and 402 Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze. Match the Baldwin finish number on the hardware you already have rather than the finish name, since several of the brasses and bronzes read alike in a photo.
6) Can I use the Baldwin 5162 lever on a mortise lock, or only on interior passage and privacy sets?
Both. The 5162 works for interior sets like passage and privacy when combined with a rose, and it also goes onto a mortise lock set using handle set trim or an escutcheon plate. That is the point of buying the lever separately: the same handle carries across the entry mortise lock and the bedroom and bath doors, so the whole house reads as one set of hardware.
7) Can I mix the Baldwin 5162 lever with knobs on other doors in the same house?
Yes, and Baldwin builds the Estate line for exactly that. Knobs and levers in the collection share the rose and escutcheon system, so you can run levers on the doors that need an easier grip and knobs elsewhere, in the same finish. Keep the finish code identical across the order, for example 056 Lifetime PVD Satin Nickel on every opening, and the mix reads deliberate instead of accidental.
8) What else could I buy instead of the Baldwin Estate 5162 lever handle?
For a straight lever handle alternative, the Imperial USA TH1100 Series lever handle is another option we carry, available in a left hand half. It is a different animal from the 5162 though: the Baldwin is Estate Series residential trim you build up with a separate rose or escutcheon, so if what you want is the mix-and-match rose system and the fifteen Baldwin finishes, a single-series lever will not substitute for it.
9) I only need to replace one broken lever on a Baldwin Estate door. Do I have to buy a whole set?
No, a single lever is orderable. Choose the Half Pair in the hand you need and the finish code that matches the rest of the opening, and reuse the existing rose and latch. That is the cheaper repair on a unit turn, provided the finish on the remaining hardware has not aged away from the original, which happens with 031 Non-Lacquered Brass since it patinas by design.
10) Is the Imperial USA TH1100 lever a direct swap for a Baldwin Estate 5162?
They are not the same family of trim. The Baldwin Estate 5162 is an Estate Series lever intended to be mixed and matched with Baldwin roses and escutcheon plates, and it is sold as a pair, a pinned pair, or a single left-hand or right-hand half pair so a passage, privacy, full dummy or half dummy set can be built up from the parts. The Imperial USA lever handle belongs to the separate TH1100 Series. Where an existing Baldwin Estate rose or escutcheon is staying in the door and only the lever is being changed, the 5162 is the one that is designed around that trim.
11) What does the Baldwin Estate 5162 lever look like, and what style of interior does it suit?
The 5162 is a clean modern lever, a smooth straight-lined shape with no ornament, meant for contemporary interiors. If you are working on a traditional or transitional house with heavy panel doors and ornate rosettes, this profile will fight the rest of the millwork. In a flat-panel or minimal interior it is the right read.
12) Is the Baldwin 5162 lever solid brass?
Brass construction, per Baldwin, which is why the 5162 has weight in the hand compared with a tubular residential lever. The PVD finishes in the range, 003 Polished Brass PVD, 044 Satin Brass PVD, 055 Polished Nickel PVD, 056 and 076, are the ones to specify where the hardware sees sun or moisture, since PVD is the durable plating process in the line.
