Baldwin 5399003H – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Baldwin Estate 5399H repair kit work on a 2-1/4 inch thick door?
Yes. The 5399H mechanics repair kit covers doors 2 inches to 2-1/4 inches thick. That is a thick-door range, well past the 1-3/4 inch standard commercial door, so it is the kit to use on heavy Estate handleset installations on oversized entry doors. If your door is thinner than 2 inches, this is not the right kit letter for it.
2) What does the Baldwin 5399H repair kit actually replace on a handleset?
It is the internal mechanics hardware, not the handle or the lock itself. Kit H is the Estate Series service kit for sectional and escutcheon handlesets fitted with a lever, supplying the brass and steel working parts that drive the lever. You reuse your existing handleset trim and finish plates.
3) My Baldwin handleset has a knob, not a lever. Is 5399H the right kit?
No. Kit H is the lever version. Baldwin splits the Estate mechanics repair kits by trim type, and the knob equivalent is Kit G rather than H. Ordering H for a knob handleset gets you the wrong drive parts.
4) Does the Baldwin 5399H kit fit both sectional and one-piece escutcheon handlesets?
Both. The 5399H is specified for sectional and escutcheon Estate handlesets, so the same kit letter covers the two-piece sectional trim and the full escutcheon plate style, as long as the trim is a lever and the door falls in the 2 to 2-1/4 inch range.
5) What finish should I order the Baldwin 5399H repair kit in to match my existing Estate handleset?
Two finishes are offered: 003 Polished Brass PVD and 112 Venetian Bronze. Match the number stamped or recorded on the handleset you are repairing, since Baldwin finish codes carry across the Estate line. If your handleset is in a finish outside those two, the exposed parts in the kit will not match.
6) Is the Baldwin Estate 5399H kit suitable for a commercial building or an apartment turnover?
Baldwin classes the Estate 5399H as residential hardware. For single family homes, condos, and high-end multi-family entry doors it is the correct service part. For a commercial opening that needs a graded lockset, this is not the repair path, and the Estate handleset it serves is not a commercial device.
7) What is the Baldwin 5399H made of, and will it hold up in an exterior entry door?
Brass and steel construction. That is the same material mix Baldwin uses in the Estate handlesets themselves, so the replacement mechanics are matched to the original entry door application rather than being a lighter service part.
