Baldwin Estate 5510 ASA Strike

Lip to center is the distance from the outer edge of the strike lip back to the center of the latch opening, and on the 5510 it is 1-1/4 inches. That number has to suit how far the door face sits from the frame rabbet. Too short and the latch drags on the lip instead of riding over it; too long and the lip sticks out past the casing where it catches hands and mop handles. Measure from the centerline of your latch to the outside face of the stop and match it.

It's a residential strike from Baldwin's Estate line, brass, in the ASA size. Fine for homes and light multi-family unit doors. For a commercial opening with a fire label or a Grade 1 mortise lock, spec the strike the lock manufacturer lists for that device instead.

It's sold on its own. The 5510 is the frame-side strike plate only, no latch, no lock, no lever. Buy it when you are replacing a damaged or mismatched strike, changing finish on an existing opening, or preparing a new frame for an Estate lock you already have.

Seven: 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 055 Polished Nickel PVD, 056 Lifetime PVD Satin Nickel, 060 Satin Brass Brown, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 190 Satin Black, and 260 Polished Chrome. If you are matching strikes to existing Baldwin Estate trim on other doors, order by that same numeric finish code rather than by the finish name, since the codes are what keep the lot consistent.

No handing to specify. The 5510 is a symmetrical ASA strike, 1-7/8 by 4-7/8 inches with a 1-1/4 inch lip to center, so the same part works on a left or right hand door. Just orient the lip toward the direction the latch approaches from.

031 is living brass with no clear coat, so it darkens and patinas with handling and will not stay bright. Pair it only with other 031 pieces. If you want a brass tone that holds its appearance, 055 Polished Nickel PVD and 056 Lifetime PVD Satin Nickel are the plated finishes in the same range, and PVD is the durable one for a rental or high-traffic entry.

Either. The ASA size started with hollow metal frames, but the 5510 mortises into a wood jamb the same way, you just rout the 1-7/8 by 4-7/8 inch pocket and the latch cavity behind it. In wood, back the screws into the stud or add a longer screw through the box so the strike does not tear out on a kick.
