Baldwin 5520190PFLS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Baldwin Estate 5520 privacy latch fit a door bored for a 2-3/4 inch backset?
Yes. The Estate 5520 privacy latch is built for a 2-3/4 inch backset, the wider of the two standard residential backsets (the other being 2-3/8 inch). Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore hole before ordering; if that measurement is 2-3/8 inch, this latch will not line up with the knob.
2) What size mortise does the Baldwin 5520 latch faceplate need in the door edge?
The latch faceplate measures 1 inch by 2-1/4 inches, so the edge of the door needs a mortise cut to that footprint. That is the standard face size on most residential tubular latches, so a straight swap into an existing prep is usually clean.
3) What strike comes with the Baldwin Estate 5520 privacy latch, and what frame prep does it need?
It ships with a full lip strike measuring 1-5/8 by 2-1/4 inches. The extended lip covers the jamb edge and guides the latch in, which helps on frames where the door has settled slightly. Your jamb mortise needs to accept that 1-5/8 by 2-1/4 inch plate.
4) Does buying the Baldwin 5520 get me the knobs too?
No. This is the latch mechanism with its full lip strike only, sold as a replacement or service part. The knob or lever, roses, spindle, and privacy turn piece are ordered separately from the Estate trim.
5) Is the 5520 a locking latch or just a passage latch?
It is a privacy function latch, the bed and bath type. It works with a privacy knob or lever set that locks from inside the room with a turn button or push button and releases with an emergency tool from the corridor side. It is not keyed and gives no key security.
6) Is the Baldwin 5520 latch suitable for a commercial opening like an office restroom?
Baldwin lists the Estate 5520 as residential. For high-traffic commercial restrooms and institutional openings you want a Grade 1 or Grade 2 commercial privacy set instead; this one belongs on interior bedroom and bath doors in homes, condos, and multi-family units.
7) Will this latch work with Baldwin Estate knobs I already have on other doors?
It is the Estate Series privacy latch, model 5520PFLS, so it is the component Baldwin pairs with Estate knob and lever trim. If you are standardizing a house or a building on Estate hardware, matching the backset (2-3/4 inch here) is the thing to confirm door by door.
8) What finish does the Baldwin Estate 5520 privacy latch come in?
One finish: 190 Satin Black. Baldwin's finish numbering is consistent across the Estate line, so a 190 latch and strike will match 190 knobs, roses, and hinges on the same door.
