Baldwin 5523102FLS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What backset does the Baldwin Estate 5523 passage latch use?
It's a 2-3/4 inch backset latch, meaning the center of the bore sits 2-3/4 inches from the door edge. That's the deeper of the two standard residential backsets (the other being 2-3/8 inch), so it will not drop into a door bored at 2-3/8 without redrilling. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing hole before you order.
2) Will the Baldwin 5523 latch mortise into my existing latch pocket?
The latch faceplate measures 1 inch by 2-1/4 inches, which is the common radius-corner face size on residential lever sets. If your existing latch face matches that footprint, it drops into the same pocket. A wider or square-corner face means you'll be chiseling.
3) Is this the whole lockset or just the latch?
It's the latch mechanism and strike only, not a complete lever set. The Estate 5523 is the internal passage latch a Baldwin Estate lever assembly mounts to, so you'll need the levers, rosettes or escutcheons, and spindle hardware separately unless you already have them on the door.
4) What kind of strike comes with the Baldwin Estate 5523?
A full lip strike ships with it, measuring 1-5/8 by 2-1/4 inches. The full lip wraps the jamb edge so the latchbolt rides up onto it instead of catching the wood. If your frame is already mortised for a T-strike or a smaller box strike, plan on reworking the jamb prep.
5) Is the Baldwin 5523 latch suitable for a commercial opening?
Baldwin catalogs the Estate 5523 as residential hardware. For high-traffic commercial doors, office buildings, schools, or anywhere with a cycle or fire-door requirement, specify a commercial-grade cylindrical or mortise lock instead. This one suits homes, multi-family unit interiors, and light-duty hall and closet doors.
6) What is the Baldwin 5523 latch made of?
Brass and steel construction. That matters on a latch that gets cycled constantly on a hall or closet door, and the brass components take the applied finish.
