Baldwin Estate 5523 2-3/4" Lever Privacy Latch

That's exactly what the 5523 is built for. It's a 2-3/4 inch backset privacy latch, meaning the center of the bore sits 2-3/4 inches from the door edge. If your door is bored at 2-3/8 inches, which is the other common residential backset, this latch won't line up and you need the 2-3/8 inch version instead.

Just the latch mechanism and strike, not the lever trim. The 5523 is the privacy latch component used behind Baldwin Estate Series lever handles, so you're buying it to replace a failed latch or to match a latch to trim you already have. Privacy function means the door locks from the inside only, with a thumbturn or push button on the lever, and releases with an emergency tool from the outside. That's the bed and bath application. The 5523 is a privacy latch, so it won't accept a key cylinder. For a bedroom or bath door it's correct; for a closet or hall door where you want no locking at all you want a passage latch, and for an exterior or office door you want a keyed entry latch.

The faceplate measures 1 x 2-1/4 inches, so the edge mortise has to be cut to that footprint. If you're swapping into a door already prepped for a different brand with a larger faceplate, the 5523 will leave a gap; a smaller existing mortise has to be enlarged.

The 5523 ships with a T strike measuring 1-7/8 x 2-3/4 inches. If your jamb is prepped for a full-lip ANSI strike or a smaller round-corner residential strike, the existing cutout won't match and you'll need to re-mortise the jamb or reuse a strike with the same footprint.

Baldwin lists the 5523 as residential hardware. For a bed and bath door in a house, condo or multi-family unit interior it's the right part. For a commercial opening or a high-traffic corridor door, spec a commercial-grade lockset instead rather than putting a residential latch on it.

You can, as long as every door in the fleet is bored at 2-3/4 inch backset and prepped for a 1 x 2-1/4 inch faceplate and a 1-7/8 x 2-3/4 inch T strike. Doors bored at 2-3/8 inches need the shorter-backset version. Order the same finish code across the buildings so the visible faceplates match, and remember this is a privacy latch, so it only suits bed and bath doors, not closets or entries.
