1) Does a passage lever like the Baldwin L015 lock at all?
No, and that is the point of it. Passage function means the lever always retracts the latch from both sides, with no key and no thumbturn. Baldwin lists it as non-keyed. Use it on halls, closets and pantry doors. For a bedroom or bath where someone needs to lock the door from inside, you want the privacy version of the same Estate lever instead.
2) Do I have to order the Baldwin Estate L015 lever left hand or right hand?
Neither. The L015 lever is reversible, so one part number handles a left or right hand door. On a passage set you are only reversing the lever orientation and the latch, which is done at install.
3) What backset does the preconfigured Baldwin Estate L015 passage set come with?
The preconfigured Quick Ship set ships with the 2-3/8 inch backset latch, which is the common residential interior backset. For a commercial corridor or anything spec'd to a grade, go to something like the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lever, which is rated heavy duty and fire rated, or the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever. For a lighter commercial interior the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage lever.
5) What looks like a substitute for the Baldwin Estate L015 passage lever but will not actually latch the door?
Dummy levers are the common mix-up. The Baldwin Estate L015 with R016 rose is a working passage lock with a latch and a full lip strike. A dummy trim has no latch at all and only pulls the door. The Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy cylindrical lever, the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy trim, the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is a Grade 2 single dummy trim, the Callan Bentley is a Grade 2 dummy lever, and the Emtek Arts and Crafts and Cortina dummy pairs are dummy function. Use those only on closet or inactive leaves where nothing needs to latch.
6) My door is thicker than 1-3/4 inch - what passage lever can I use in place of the Baldwin Estate L015?
The Baldwin Estate L015 is built for 1-3/8 inch and 1-3/4 inch doors. For thicker stock, the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lever covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, the Hager 2510 Grade 2 passage lever covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, the Arrow GL01 Grade 2 passage lever covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 passage lever covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. All four hold the passage function - no key, no lock.
7) What finishes does the Baldwin Estate L015 passage lever come in?
Eight: Satin Brass PVD (044), Polished Nickel PVD (055), Lifetime PVD Satin Nickel (056), Lifetime PVD Graphite Nickel (076), Oil Rubbed Bronze (102), Venetian Bronze (112), Satin Black (190) and Polished Chrome (260). If you are matching existing Baldwin openings in a house, the PVD finishes hold their color and the 102 oil rubbed bronze is a living finish that will change with wear, so mixing new and old in 102 may not look identical.
8) The frame on my old door has a square cutout mortised for a full lip strike. Will this Baldwin set reuse it?
It ships with a full lip strike, which is the type that wraps the frame edge and is mortised into a rectangular pocket. If your jamb is already cut for a full lip strike at the same height, it drops in. A jamb prepped for a small round-corner face-only strike will need the pocket enlarged.
