Baldwin L023044RDM – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does a Baldwin Estate L023 half dummy lever actually latch, or is it just a pull?
Half dummy is a pull only. The L023 lever with R017 rose has no latch, no spindle through the door, and no locking or privacy function, so it mounts to one face of the door and does not move anything. Use it on a closet door held shut by a ball catch or roller catch, on a false door, or on the inactive leaf of a pair. If you need the door to stay latched on its own, you need a passage set instead.
2) Why does a Baldwin half dummy lever come in left hand and right hand if it doesn't turn?
A lever has a direction it points, so it has to be ordered handed even though nothing operates. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left the door is left hand, hinges on the right is right hand, and the lever should sweep toward the latch edge. The L023 is offered in both hands across all eight finishes. Get it backwards and the lever points into the hinge side, which looks wrong next to the working sets on the rest of the doors.
3) Do I need to drill a 2-1/8 inch bore for a Baldwin L023 half dummy?
Not for the half dummy itself. It surface mounts and needs no cross bore and no edge bore, since there is no latch running to the door edge. The 2-1/8 inch bore and 1 inch edge bore figures on the Estate L023 apply to the working passage, privacy and full dummy sets built on the same lever and R017 rose, so if you are matching a half dummy to an existing prepped door the hole is already there and the rose will cover it.
4) Will the Baldwin Estate L023 fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
Yes, 1-3/8 and 1-3/4 inch doors are both covered by the Estate L023 lever and R017 rose. Those are the two standard residential door thicknesses, so older interior doors at 1-3/8 and newer or solid core doors at 1-3/4 both take it without a spacer or an extension kit.
5) I'm putting Baldwin Estate levers on a whole floor of doors. Can I mix half dummies with passage and privacy sets and have them match?
That is the point of the Estate line. The L023 lever and R017 rose is the same trim used on the passage, privacy and full dummy sets, so the closet doors on a half dummy, the hall doors on passage and the bath on privacy all read as one suite. Order the same finish code across the whole floor and only the function changes behind the rose. Backset on the functional sets is 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch, so they drop onto existing prepped doors either way.
6) Half dummy or full dummy for a double door closet?
A pair of doors needs two levers, one on each leaf, and the L023 half dummy is a single lever for one face. Order two half dummies, one left hand and one right hand, so both levers sweep toward the center gap. Full dummy is the choice when a single door needs a matching lever on both faces. If you would rather buy the pair as one item, Emtek sells its Arts and Crafts and Cortina levers as dummy pairs.
7) Can I use a Baldwin Estate L023 half dummy on office or apartment corridor doors?
Baldwin rates the Estate L023 as residential, so it suits homes, condo interiors and apartment unit interiors. For a corridor, stairwell or anything on a commercial traffic count you want a Grade 1 dummy trim instead: the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a heavy duty Grade 1 single dummy lever, and the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty version of the same idea. Both are non-keyed dummy trim like the Baldwin, just built for commercial abuse.
8) The opening is 2 inches thick - will the Baldwin Estate L023 work, or do I need something else?
The Baldwin Estate L023 is built for 1-3/8 and 1-3/4 inch thick doors. For thicker stiles, the Hager 2510 passage lever covers 1-3/8 to 2 inches, the Deltana 6201 Manchester and 6431 Linstead entry levers cover 1-3/8 to 2 inches, the Falcon K101 passage lever covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches, and the Dexter C1000 asylum function lever covers 1-3/8 to 2 inches.
9) What finishes does the Baldwin Estate L023 lever come in?
Eight, and the codes matter when you are matching existing hardware: 044 Satin Brass PVD, 055 Polished Nickel PVD, 056 Lifetime PVD Satin Nickel, 076 Lifetime PVD Graphite Nickel, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 112 Venetian Bronze, 190 Satin Black and 260 Polished Chrome. Five of the eight are PVD plated, which holds color far better than a lacquered brass on a door that gets handled daily. Oil Rubbed Bronze is a living finish and will change with wear, so do not expect it to stay identical to a PVD piece beside it.
10) The closet door swings open on its own. Is a dummy lever the wrong choice?
The lever is not the problem, but a dummy alone will not hold a door shut. The L023 half dummy has no latch at all, so it needs a ball catch, roller catch or magnetic catch mortised into the door edge and head jamb to keep the door closed. If you would rather have a real latch, order the same Estate lever and R017 rose in the passage function, which ships with a latch and a full lip strike.
11) What is the difference between the Baldwin Estate L023 and a Kwikset or Callan dummy lever?
Function is the same, the build and the finish range are not. The Estate L023 is a residential Baldwin lever with a round R017 rose in eight finishes, five of them PVD. Callan's Bentley is a Grade 2 dummy lever, a cheaper way to cover a closet door. Kwikset's Breton and Delta lever sets in the same family are Grade 3 passage function, so they latch rather than being dummies. Pick the Baldwin when the rest of the doors are already Estate trim and you need the dummy to disappear into the set.
12) What is the difference between a single dummy and a dummy pair for a double door?
The Baldwin Estate L023 half dummy is a single-side lever with a rose. For a pair of doors or both faces of one door, Emtek supplies dummy sets as a pair - the Arts and Crafts lever dummy pair, the Hammered lever dummy pair, and the Classic Brass Cortina lever dummy pair are all dummy function pairs. Baldwin's Estate levers are also sold individually so they can be mixed with roses for a matching look, in finishes including Satin Brass PVD and Oil Rubbed Bronze.
13) Is a lever trim for an exit device the same as a dummy lever?
No, though both can look like a fixed lever on the door face. The Corbin Russwin 585F715 is a Grade 1 lock lever for the ED8000 pushpad exit device and the Imperial USA ED-EL500HD is a heavy duty escutcheon lever trim with an entry function - both mount to an exit device, not to a bored 2-1/8 inch cylindrical prep. The Baldwin Estate L023 is a cylindrical dummy lever for a 2-1/8 inch bore with a 1 inch edge bore.
14) Is the Baldwin Estate L023 lever keyed, and can I add a cylinder later?
Non-keyed, and no cylinder can be added. A half dummy has no lock body behind the rose to accept one. If a door in the same run needs to be keyed, order that opening as a keyed function set and keep the L023 half dummies on the closets and inactive leaves so the trim still matches.
