Baldwin Reserve Ellipse Non-Turning One-Sided Dummy Knob with Traditional Rose

Just the knob and rose. The Ellipse dummy is a non-turning, one-sided trim with no latch and no lock inside it. It mounts to the door face and does not go through a bored cross-bore, so the door has to be held closed some other way, usually a ball catch, roller catch or magnetic catch. Common uses are closet doors, false doors and the inactive leaf of a double door where you want the hardware to look the same but nothing needs to latch.

That is what it is built for. The Ellipse dummy carries the same knob and rose styling as the active Reserve passage, privacy and entry sets, so a closet or false door reads identically to the working doors beside it. Match the finish code and the rose shape across the openings and the hardware lines up. Reserve rose options here are Traditional Arch, Traditional Round and Traditional Square, in Polished Brass PVD, Satin Brass PVD, Polished Nickel PVD, Venetian Bronze, Satin Nickel, Matte Antique Nickel, Satin Black and Polished Chrome.

A 1 inch edge bore is what the Reserve dummy calls for. There is no 2-1/8 inch cross-bore needed for the knob itself since nothing passes through the door, which is why it drops onto slab closet doors cleanly. If you are converting an opening that already carries a full 2-1/8 inch bored prep, the dummy trim will cover that face prep rather than use it.

The Baldwin Reserve Ellipse is a residential dummy knob with no latch or locking mechanism, so it does not control an opening. For a corridor or classroom door that needs to secure, the Sargent 8XG04 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom/closet knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset and single cylinder, and the Sargent 6G04 is the Grade 2 standard duty storeroom equivalent. For a classroom function specifically, the Dexter C2000 Series classroom ball knob lock is Grade 2 and keyed, covering 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Where a fire-rated opening is involved, the Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset with a fire rating and interchangeable core, covering 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch doors.

A dummy knob does not operate a latch at all - the Baldwin Reserve Ellipse mounts into the 2-1/8 inch standard door preparation but has no latch or locking mechanism behind it. If the closet door needs a latch that holds it shut, order a passage function instead. Outside trim knobs read like dummy knobs in a catalog but are not interchangeable with one. The Sargent 78-2875 is an outside knob only with B design for the 7800 Series, the Sargent 28C-KNOB is exit device trim with knob and rose in an entrance function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Imperial USA ED-BKL580 is knob trim in a storeroom function. Each is trim built to drive an exit device, not a standalone knob for a blank door face. No handing, no keying and no backset to call out, since the knob does not turn and nothing runs through the door.

Handing does not apply. The Ellipse dummy is a fixed, non-turning knob, so there is no spindle rotation or latch bevel to get wrong and the same part works on a left-hand or right-hand door. The only orientation decision is which face of the door you mount it on, and how high you set it to line up with the knobs on the neighbouring openings.

Match by series so the trim reads the same down the hall. The Pamex Baron FTF line runs the same knob across functions: FTF30 passage, FTF10 privacy, and FTF-00 entrance/office, all Grade 3 for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors.
