Baldwin DC.COLxROU.TRR.003S – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is a double cylinder handleset legal on an exterior house door, and what does it actually mean day to day?
A double cylinder handleset takes a key on both sides, so nobody gets out through that door without a key in hand. The Baldwin Reserve Columbus handleset is built that way on purpose, for doors with glass beside or in them where a thumbturn could be reached and flipped. It's also why many jurisdictions restrict them on required egress doors. Check your local code before you install one, and if the door is the only way out of a bedroom or unit, a single cylinder version is the safer specification.
2) Will the Baldwin Columbus handleset drop into my existing door prep, or do I have to redrill?
It works on a standard bored prep. The backset is field adjustable between 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inches, so it lands on whichever of the two your door was drilled for, and the edge bore is 1 inch, which is the standard latch bore on a residential exterior door. If your existing handleset used a 2-1/8 inch face bore at either of those backsets, no new drilling is needed.
3) Do I have to specify handing on the Baldwin Reserve Columbus handleset?
Only if you choose a lever for the inside trim. The Curve, Decorative and Federal levers are each ordered left or right handed, so you need to know which way the door swings before you order. The knob options, Ellipse, Round and Traditional, are not handed and go on either swing. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left, it's a left hand door.
4) Can I key this Baldwin handleset to match the other locks on the house?
Yes, within the same keyway. The Columbus handleset uses Baldwin's C keyway and can be ordered keyed alike so several openings share one key, or keyed different if each door needs its own. If you already have a key code you want it cut to, there's a key code field on the order. Locks on another manufacturer's keyway won't key with it.
5) Is the Baldwin Reserve Columbus handleset strong enough for a rental or a busy front door?
It's tested to exceed ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 security, and Baldwin catalogs the Reserve series as residential. Grade 2 is the normal residential entry level, and it puts this in the same security class as the Schlage F60 Addison handleset and the Master Lock HDLB Series handleset, both Grade 2, and a step above the Grade 3 Kwikset Amador and Belleview exterior handlesets. For a single family home, a condo or a light multi-family unit door that's the right tier. For a high traffic commercial entrance you want a Grade 1 commercial lockset instead.
6) What is the closest keyed entry handleset to the Baldwin Reserve Columbus if a single cylinder is needed instead of a double cylinder?
The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is a double cylinder handleset, meaning it takes a key on both the inside and the outside. If the opening needs a key only on the outside with a thumbturn inside, the Weslock 1411 Traditionale Colonial handleset with Eleganti knob is a single cylinder keyed entry, and the Weslock 2810 Hillcrest with Hudson knob is also single cylinder. The Schlage Residential F60 Addison single cylinder keyed entry handleset with Accent lever is another single cylinder option in the F Series. Single cylinder is the usual choice where an egress door has glazing far enough from the lock that a keyed interior is not called for.
7) Which handlesets that look like the Baldwin Columbus are actually dummy sets with no lock in them?
The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is a keyed entry handleset. Several similar looking handlesets are dummy trim only, with no latch and no cylinder: the Emtek 3002 Memphis, 3004 Hamilton, 3005 Melrose and 3006 Manhattan brass mortise entrance handlesets are all dummy function, as are the Weslock 6695 Belmont with Impresa knob and the Weslock 2815 Hillcrest with New Heaven lever. Those are for an inactive leaf of a pair or a fixed panel. Ordering one for a working entry door leaves the opening with no lock at all.
8) The Kwikset 687AMD is also a SmartKey handleset. Can it replace the Baldwin Columbus?
Not on a like for like basis. The Kwikset 687AMD Amador is a single cylinder handleset supplied exterior only, in both the SMT version and the SMC version keyed to the SC1 keyway, and it is listed for a 1-3/4 inch door at Grade 3. The Kwikset 687BW Belleview is the same exterior-only single cylinder arrangement. The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is a double cylinder keyed entry supplied with interior trim, offered with Curve, Decorative and Federal levers or Ellipse, Round and Traditional knobs inside, on a C keyway. Anyone matching an existing SmartKey system should note the Kwikset SMC part is SC1, which is a different keyway from the Baldwin C.
9) Can I have a different finish inside than outside on a Baldwin handleset?
By default the interior trim ships in the same finish as the exterior. A split finish is available, but you have to write in the two finishes you want when you order, otherwise it comes matched. That's the option to use when the exterior is Venetian Bronze to suit the elevation and the interior needs to match Polished Nickel or Satin Nickel hardware already inside.
10) Can I standardize a whole building on the Baldwin Reserve Columbus handleset?
For residential doors, yes, and there's a lot of room to keep one look across a property. All units can share the C keyway keyed alike, the same exterior finish carries across every entrance, and the traditional styling stays consistent while individual doors get knobs or levers as needed. Two limits to plan around: the double cylinder function is restricted on some egress doors by local code, and Baldwin lists the Reserve series as residential, so leased commercial suites and heavy public entrances should be specified with commercial Grade 1 hardware instead.
11) Is there a keypad or app controlled handleset alternative to the Baldwin Columbus double cylinder?
The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is a mechanical double cylinder handleset keyed to a C keyway. For electronic access on a similar full handleset, the Yale Real Living BYRD226CBARX Assure Lock pairs a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth touchscreen deadbolt with the Ridgefield handleset, and the BYRD226NRRX is the standalone touchscreen version of the same set with no network radio. The Kwikset 815SCEHFL-CP913CNT San Clemente handleset carries a contemporary SmartCode keypad electronic deadbolt with Halifax lever interior trim. All three replace the keyed cylinder function with a code at the door rather than a second key.
12) Which entry handlesets are solid brass if that is what the job calls for instead of the Baldwin Columbus?
The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is offered in eight finishes including 003 Polished Brass PVD and 044 Satin Brass PVD. Where the material itself is specified as solid brass, the Deltana 803871B Hanover, the Deltana 815871 St. Ann and the Deltana 825871 Kingston are all solid brass entry handlesets. Deltana's 810871 Montego is the same Deltana handleset family sized for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors.
13) What is the alternative to the Baldwin Columbus for a door that needs a handleset but no key at all?
The Baldwin Reserve Columbus is a keyed entry handleset requiring a key on both faces. Where the door does not need to lock by key, the Schlage Residential JE285 Barcelona style handleset with Seville lever is a non-keyed entry function, Grade 2, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. For an interconnected arrangement instead, the Schlage Residential JI18/19 combines a passage lock with a keyed deadbolt and Torino lever, so the latch is free-turning and the security sits in the separate deadbolt.
