Bemis 1600E4 000 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to keep retightening the Bemis Ashland toilet seat after installation?
No. The Ashland 1600E4 uses the STA-TITE fastening system, which anchors the seat to the bowl so it does not loosen and does not need to be retightened later. That is the whole point of the system for anyone maintaining a lot of restrooms: the wobbly-seat callback is the single most common toilet seat service call, and this design removes it. The E4 hinge also lets one person set the seat without a helper holding nuts under the bowl.
2) Can you take the Bemis 1600E4 seat off to clean around the hinges?
Yes. The Easy-Clean hinge releases the seat from the bowl without tools, so a housekeeping crew can lift the whole seat off, clean the porcelain and the hinge posts underneath, and drop it back on. In hospitality, healthcare and multi-family turns that matters more than the spec sheet does, because the area behind the hinge posts is where a seat that cannot be removed fails inspection.
3) Is the Bemis Ashland a slow-close toilet seat?
It is. The Whisper-Close hinge lowers the lid and ring under control instead of letting them drop, which kills the slam and the pinched fingers that come with it. For a property manager that is a noise complaint and an injury risk removed from a unit; for a school or daycare it is the reason to spec a soft-close seat over a standard one.
4) What colors does the Bemis 1600E4 Ashland toilet seat come in, and how do I match the fixtures already in my building?
Three colors: White (1600E4 000), Biscuit (1600E4 346) and Cotton White (1600E4 390). Bumpers and hinges are color-matched to the seat, so nothing reads as a mismatched white cap on a biscuit bowl. If you are standardizing across a portfolio, note that White and Cotton White are two different shades. Cotton White is the warmer one used by several fixture makers, so pull the model number off an existing bowl or hold a sample against it before you order a pallet.
5) Is an enameled wood toilet seat durable enough for a commercial restroom?
The Ashland 1600E4 is molded wood with a high-gloss enamel finish that resists chipping and scratching. Enameled wood gives you a heavier, more solid seat than plastic and it does not flex under a heavy user, which is why it holds up in multi-family and light commercial service. Where it is not the right call is a high-abuse public restroom that gets hosed down or sees standing moisture at the hinge, since a molded wood core is less forgiving of that than a solid plastic seat.
6) Does the Bemis 1600E4 come with the mounting hardware, or do I need to buy bolts separately?
The 1600E4 ships as a complete assembly with its E4 hinge and STA-TITE fastening hardware, so nothing else is required to hang it on a standard two-bolt bowl at 5-1/2 inch centers. No tools beyond a screwdriver are needed for the install, and Bemis publishes an installation guide for the seat if you want your crew working off the same sheet.
7) Are Bemis Ashland toilet seats made in the USA?
The Ashland 1600E4 is designed and assembled in the USA, with country of origin listed as US. Bemis also states the seat is made with eco-friendly materials and processes. If you are buying against a domestic-preference or sustainability requirement on a government, education or institutional contract, that is the sourcing detail your spec reviewer will ask for.
8) Are the hinges on the Bemis 1600E4 metal or plastic?
Plastic. The E4 hinge on the Ashland 1600E4 is a plastic hinge, color-matched to the seat, carrying both the Whisper-Close and Easy-Clean functions. Plastic hinges will not corrode or stain the way a chromed metal hinge does in a hard-water or heavily-sanitized restroom, which is a fair trade in most residential and light commercial work. If your spec calls out metal hinges for a heavy-abuse public restroom, this is not that seat.
