Installation & Operation

  1. Review manufacturer specifications and verify door preparation requirements including door thickness (standard 1-3/4" or up to 5" thick door configuration), mortise pocket dimensions, and handing requirements.
  2. Use manufacturer-provided templates to mark mounting hole locations accurately on door and frame surfaces for proper backset and faceplate positioning.
  3. Prepare door mortise pocket to accommodate 5-7/8" H x 7/8" D x 4-1/16" W case dimensions and route for 8" H x 1-1/4" W faceplate.
  4. Install lock body in mortise pocket and secure with appropriate fasteners per manufacturer torque specifications, ensuring proper alignment with door bevel.
  5. Configure four position hub toggle settings for desired operation (always locked, always unlocked, or locked by key) and verify latch reversibility if handing change is required.
  6. Test lock operation including 1" deadbolt throw, 3/4" latchbolt operation, and cylinder function to verify proper installation and smooth operation. Refer to manufacturer documentation for complete installation details and troubleshooting.

BEST 45HCAD626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does storeroom function mean on a BEST 45HCA mortise lock?
Storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at all times. The key retracts the latch for entry but does not leave the lever unlocked, so the door relocks behind every person who goes through it. The inside lever always retracts the latch, so egress is free. That is why it goes on mechanical rooms, stock rooms, IT closets and tenant storage, anywhere you want key-only entry and no chance of somebody leaving the lever unlocked. If you need the outside lever to stay unlocked during business hours, storeroom is the wrong function for that opening.
2) Does the BEST 45HCA lock body come with a cylinder or core?
No core is included. The 45HCA ships prepped for a BEST small format interchangeable core, less core, so you supply the SFIC that matches your keying system. It is a single cylinder lock, keyed outside only. That prep is an advantage if you already run BEST SFIC across a building, you drop your own core in and the opening is on your existing system the same day. It also means you cannot install it until the core is on hand.
3) Do I have to order the BEST 45HCA handed, or can I reverse it on the job?
You pick a hand when you order (RH, LH, RHRB or LHRB), but the lock body is field reversible. The latch rotates 180 degrees to change handing and you do not have to open the case to do it. Locksmiths carrying stock for service calls get real use out of that, one body covers whichever way the door swings. The auxiliary deadlatch bolt is non-handed.
4) Will the BEST 45HCA latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
Depends on the strike geometry. The 45HCA runs a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 3/4 inch latchbolt throw and a 1 inch deadbolt throw, so the frame strike has to have a lip and pocket that accept both bolts at that projection. If you are swapping in on an existing BEST or standard ANSI mortise prep, that usually lines up. The order form also carries a 7/8 inch lip to center strike option, which is what you use when the frame or stop condition needs the extra lip reach.
5) Is the BEST 45HCA a complete lockset or just the lock body?
Body only. The 45HCA is the mortise lock case, field reversible, with the latch, deadbolt and armored front. Levers or knobs, roses or escutcheon trim, and the SFIC core are all separate line items you order to match. Budget for trim and a core on every opening or the door will not be operable when the box lands.
6) Should I use a mortise lock like the BEST 45HCA or a cylindrical lever on a storeroom door?
Mortise is the heavier answer and it costs you a pocket in the door. The 45HCA puts a 1 inch stainless deadbolt and a 3/4 inch latchbolt in one 0.095 inch cold rolled steel case, so you get separate deadlocking security plus latching in a single body, and the four position hub toggle lets you set the door always locked, always unlocked, or locked by key. A cylindrical lever only bores through the door and is faster to install and retrofit, but it has no deadbolt. If the door is already mortise prepped, or it is a high traffic or high value opening, go mortise. If you are cutting into a door that has only a 2-1/8 inch cross bore, a cylindrical lock is the practical choice.
7) Is there an antimicrobial version of the BEST 45HCA for a hospital or school?
Two finishes carry it: 626AM, satin chrome with the UltraShield antimicrobial protected coating, and 630AM, satin stainless steel with the same coating. UltraShield inhibits growth of bacteria and other microbes on the hardware surface. BEST points it at hospital and healthcare, elderly care, education, transportation, food service and hospitality work. If you are standardizing a facility, note that AM is only offered on those two finishes, so a building spec'd in 626 or 630 can move to the antimicrobial version without changing the look of the hardware.
8) Is the BEST 45HCA an electrified or access control lock?
No, it is purely mechanical. The 45HCA is a key operated storeroom lock with no electrified option, no request to exit switch and no monitoring. Nothing changes on it when the power drops, the door stays locked outside and free to exit inside. If the opening has to release on a card read or tie into an access control head end, this body will not do it and you need an electrified mortise lock instead.
9) What finishes does the BEST 45HCA mortise lock body come in?
Fifteen, and the finish decides how well it blends with the trim already on your other openings. Brass: 605 bright, 606 satin. Bronze: 611 bright, 612 satin, 613 oxidized satin oil rubbed, 690 statuary dark bronze. Nickel: 618 bright, 619 satin. Chrome: 625 bright, 626 satin, plus 626AM antimicrobial. Stainless: 629 bright, 630 satin, plus 630AM antimicrobial. And 622 flat black. Two of them change over time on purpose: 613 is meant to wear to an antique appearance, and 690 stays a dark brown. For a building being matched door to door, 626 and 630 are the two commercial standards most existing hardware will already be in.
10) Can I get the BEST 45HCA with security head screws?
Yes, security head screws are an option you select on the order. Worth taking on any opening where the lock is reachable by the public, a corridor storeroom, a school or a transit facility, since standard heads can be backed out with a driver anyone carries. The case is already built with four cover screws at each corner and an interlocking armored front and cover at the latch.
11) How durable is the BEST 45HCA lock body for a high traffic commercial door?
Heavy duty, commercial rated, and built for it. The case, cover and armored front are 0.095 inch cold rolled steel, zinc dichromate plated against corrosion. The latch is a solid one piece stainless steel anti-friction design with 50 percent more contact surface against the strike, oil impregnated, on a curve cut for cycle life. The hub runs on a roller bearing. Deadbolt and auxiliary bolt are both stainless. That is the construction behind the Grade 1 Operation and Strength rating.
