BEST CMLR2103 628 36 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the minimum door stile width for the BEST CMLR2103 wide stile pushpad device?
4-1/4 inches minimum stile. It's a wide stile pushpad device, so on a narrow stile aluminum storefront with a 2 inch or 3 inch stile it will not land. Measure the lock stile before you order; narrow stile openings need a narrow stile device instead.
2) Can the BEST Apex 2103 rim device be used on a pair of doors?
Yes, but only with a mullion. The 2100 Series rim device latches into a strike on the frame, so on a double door opening you need a removable mullion for the inactive side to latch against. For that application specify the No. S458 strike, which is the mullion strike option. Without a mullion you'd be looking at a surface vertical rod device instead.
3) Is the BEST CMLR2103 exit device fire rated?
No. This configuration is panic hardware only, not fire exit hardware, so it cannot go on a fire rated opening. Part of the reason is the hex key dogging: 1/4 turn hex dogging is standard on this device and dogging is never permitted on fire exit hardware. For a labeled door you need the fire rated version of the series.
4) What does motorized latch retraction on the BEST 2103 actually do on an access control opening?
Motorized latch retraction pulls the latchbolt back electrically so the door pushes open freely from the outside without retracting the touchbar, which is how you tie an exit device into a card reader or a push-to-open station. It's furnished with quick connect plugs, so the wiring harness lands on a plug instead of being field spliced. When power drops the latch returns to its mechanical state, and free egress from the inside is always mechanical through the pushbar.
5) Does storeroom function on the BEST 2103 mean I need a cylinder and outside trim?
Yes on both counts. Storeroom (the 03 function) means the outside is always locked and key access retracts the latch, so you need outside trim with a cylinder. Trim is not included with the device and has to be ordered separately. Functions are field selectable on this series except the double cylinder 10 function, which is handed and requires two rim cylinders that are not furnished.
6) Can I use the BEST 2103 exit device on a wood door?
No, this configuration is not wood door compatible. The series is listed for hollow metal and aluminum type openings and covers ANSI A115.2 (Type 161), A115.18 cylindrical and A115.1 (Type 86) mortise lock preparation. For a wood door you need the wood door prepped version of the series.
7) Will the 3/4 inch latchbolt on the BEST Apex rim device work with my existing strike?
The latchbolt is stainless steel, deadlocking, with a 3/4 inch throw, which is standard rim exit device geometry. The device comes with the No. S300 investment cast stainless strike, black powder coated. If you're going onto an aluminum door frame, the S988 strike is the option to specify; for a mullion, the S458. Reusing an older strike is only a question of whether its lip and throw depth match that 3/4 inch bolt.
8) Do I need to specify handing for the BEST Apex 2103 rim exit device?
No. The Apex rim device is field reversible for all functions and trims, so one device covers left or right hand. It ships packaged RHRB. The only handed configuration in the series is the double cylinder 10 function.
9) Is the BEST PHI 2103 a Grade 1 device, and is it UL listed?
It is BHMA certified to ANSI 156.3, Grade 1, which is the heaviest duty classification for exit devices and what most institutional and school specs call for. The Apex line is UL Listed for panic and fire exit hardware and conforms to UL10C and UBC 7-2, though this particular configuration is supplied non fire rated.
10) Will a 36 inch BEST Apex device cover a 4 foot wide door?
No. The 36 inch device is built for a 3 foot wide opening. The 2100 Series goes up to a 4 foot 0 inch wide opening, but that needs the longer device length, not the 36 inch. Match device length to door width or the pushbar will sit short of the active area.
11) What finishes does the BEST PHI 2103 Apex rim exit device come in, and what are the covers made of?
Seven finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 satin bronze oil-rubbed, 625 bright chrome, 628 satin aluminum, and 630 satin stainless steel. The cover, touchbar, device channel, fillers and end cap are heavy wrought brass, bronze or stainless depending on finish; 628 devices use aluminum, brass, bronze and stainless components. The chassis is investment cast steel, zinc dichromated. If you're standardizing a building, 630 and 628 are the usual matches to existing commercial openings.
12) At what height does the BEST Apex touchbar mount above the floor?
Standard touchbar height is 39-15/16 inches from the floor, and it can be varied where the opening calls for it. That matters if you're matching a row of existing doors in a corridor, since a mismatched bar height on one leaf is immediately visible.
