Metallics HSSBG12E – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is a 1/2 inch HSS jobber bit the right choice for drilling steel enclosures and strut?
High speed steel jobber bits like the 1/2 inch HSSBG12E are the general purpose choice for mild steel, aluminum, and wood, which covers most electrical MRO work such as opening up a panel or enclosure. For hardened stainless or repeated production holes you want cobalt rather than plain HSS, and for a 1/2 inch hole in sheet metal a step bit will leave a cleaner round hole than a twist bit.
2) Does the black and gold coating on this Metallics bit mean anything, or is it just color?
Black and gold on the HSSBG12E refers to a black oxide plus gold oxide surface treatment on the high speed steel body. It is a surface finish that helps with heat and chip flow, not a change to the cutting geometry or the 1/2 inch cutting diameter.
3) How many bits come with Metallics part HSSBG12E?
HSSBG12E is a single 1/2 inch bit, not a set. There is one model on the part, so if you are stocking a van or a shop crib in multiple diameters you order each size as its own part number.
