Metallics HSST5 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the titanium coating on the Metallics HSST5 mean it can drill concrete or masonry?
No. The titanium coating is on a high speed steel bit meant for metal, wood, and plastic, and it reduces friction and heat so the cutting edge lasts longer in steel. Concrete, block, and brick need a carbide tipped masonry bit or an SDS hammer bit; running this bit into masonry will destroy the edge on the first hole.
2) Is the Metallics HSST5 drill bit a 135 degree split point, and what does that mean for drilling steel?
The HSST5 is a 1/8 inch titanium coated jobber length bit with a 135 degree point. A 135 degree point is the flatter geometry used for metal: it starts with less walking than a standard 118 degree point, so you can hit steel strut, enclosure sheet metal, or a junction box without center punching every hole.
3) What size hole does the Metallics HSST5 bit drill, and will it take a 6-32 or 8-32 screw tap?
It cuts a 1/8 inch hole. That is the standard tap drill size for a 5-16-18 thread and it is also the common clearance size used for #6 screws in sheet metal, so electricians keep it on hand for mounting straps, device plates, and small brackets. For 6-32 or 8-32 tapping you need a smaller #36 or #29 bit instead.
4) What is the difference between a jobber length drill bit and a stub or screw machine length?
Jobber length is the general purpose length, longer flutes than a stub bit, which is what the HSST5 is. The extra reach lets you drill through a stud, a box ear, or recessed steel, but a 1/8 inch jobber is thin and flexes if you lean on it. For tight overhead work or drilling in a confined panel, a shorter screw machine or stub length bit is more rigid and less likely to snap.
5) Is the Metallics HSST5 sold as a single bit or in a set?
It is a single bit ordered by one model number, HSST5, in the 1/8 inch size only. If you need a range of diameters you have to order each size separately rather than buying one indexed set.
