Blackburn AL 1000 NGSH – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn AL 1000 NGSH lug take?
The AL 1000 NGSH is built for 1000 kcmil conductor. It is a compression lug, so the barrel is crimped onto the cable rather than set screwed, and one lug handles one 1000 kcmil run.
2) Is this a two hole lug or a single hole lug?
Two hole. The AL 1000 NGSH is a two hole compression lug, so the pad bolts down at two points and the cable cannot rotate on the bus or ground bar under fault or vibration. If your pad only has a single tapped hole, you need a one hole lug instead.
3) How much room do I need in the enclosure for this 1000 kcmil lug?
Plan for 8-9/16 inches long by 2-7/16 inches wide on the lug body itself, plus bending radius for 1000 kcmil cable behind it. In a tight gutter or a shallow ground bar cabinet that overall length is usually the deciding dimension.
4) Do I need a hydraulic crimper for the AL 1000 NGSH, or can I use a mechanical set screw connector?
This is a compression termination, so it takes a hydraulic or battery crimp tool with the die the lug is marked for, not a wrench. If you have no crimper on site and the connection has to be made by hand, you want a mechanical set screw lug rated for 1000 kcmil instead of this one.
5) Can I use the AL 1000 NGSH on copper conductor, or is it aluminum only?
It is an AL series Blackburn compression lug, and it meets ANSI C119.4, the standard for connectors used on aluminum and copper conductors. Use it with the conductor and compression die combination called out by the lug marking; the barrel is sized for 1000 kcmil.
6) Does this lug come insulated or with a heat shrink sleeve?
No insulation. The AL 1000 NGSH ships bare, so if the termination needs to be covered you order heat shrink or a boot separately and size it to a barrel on a body measuring 8-9/16 by 2-7/16 inches.
7) Is this lug made in the USA for a Buy American job?
Country of origin on the AL 1000 NGSH is the United States, which is what a government, school, or transit submittal package usually needs documented.
8) Is the Blackburn AL 1000 NGSH sold individually or in a bag?
Sold each. Count your terminations, including spares for bad crimps, and order that quantity. Compression lugs are one shot, so a rejected crimp means a new lug.
