Blackburn AL 500 N 608 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What conductor size does the Blackburn AL 500 N 608 compression lug take?
The AL 500 N 608 is sized for 500 to 600 kcmil conductor, with a 477 to 500 kcmil range also listed for the family. It is a compression barrel, so the conductor is crimped in with a hydraulic tool and die, not bolted or set-screwed.
2) Can I use this aluminum lug on copper conductor?
The AL 500 N 608 is a tin-plated aluminum barrel lug. Tin plating over aluminum is what makes a lug dual rated for copper or aluminum conductor, but confirm the AL/CU marking stamped on the barrel against the conductor you are terminating before you crimp, since the crimp is permanent.
3) Will this two-hole lug line up with a NEMA standard pad?
Yes. It is built to NEMA two-hole spacing, so it lands on standard NEMA drilled bus pads, breaker lugs pads and ground bars that use the same hole pattern. Single-hole pads or non-NEMA drilling will not match.
4) How much room do I need in the enclosure for this lug?
Allow for a body 8-1/4 inches long by 1-3/4 inches wide. That is a long straight tongue, so check gutter depth and bending space in the can before you commit, especially where two or three of them land side by side on the same pad.
5) Does this Blackburn lug meet the connector standard our spec calls out?
It is built to ANSI C119.4, the standard covering connectors for aluminum and copper conductors. That is the reference most utility and commercial electrical specs cite for compression connectors.
6) Does the AL 500 N 608 come insulated or with a cover?
No insulation. The barrel is bare tin-plated aluminum, so you supply your own heat shrink, tape or a lug cover if the termination needs to be insulated for your application.
7) Is this lug sold individually or in a bag?
Sold each, so you order one per termination. On a three-phase feeder with neutral and ground that is five pieces per end, ten per run.
8) Is this lug made in the USA for a Buy American job?
Country of origin is the United States, which is what public-works and federally funded jobs with domestic sourcing language usually need documented at submittal.
