Blackburn C 1500 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Blackburn C 1500 splice insulated, or do I have to tape or sleeve it after crimping?
No insulation on it at all. The C 1500 is a bare tin-plated copper compression barrel, so you insulate it yourself after crimping, with heat shrink, an insulating boot, or tape build-up rated for the circuit voltage.
2) Can I use the Blackburn C 1500 to splice aluminum conductors, or is it copper only?
Copper only. The C 1500 is a tin-plated copper barrel intended for copper conductor splices. For aluminum or AL/CU work you need a connector rated for aluminum, not this one.
3) How many conductors does a Blackburn C 1500 long barrel splice join?
Two. It is a straight inline splice with one conductor entering each end of the barrel, not a multi-tap or pigtail connector. To join three or more runs you need a separate tap or multi-port connector.
4) What does the long barrel version of this Blackburn splice get me over a standard barrel?
Length. The C 1500 barrel measures 6.562, which puts more contact area on each conductor and lets you place two crimps per side for a mechanically stronger inline joint on large conductors. Standard-barrel splices are shorter and typically take one crimp per side. The tradeoff is that you need more room in the pull box or handhole, and more insulation coverage over the finished splice.
5) Do I need a hydraulic crimper for the Blackburn C 1500, or can I use a mechanical connector instead?
It is a compression connector, so it has to be crimped with a die-type tool matched to the barrel; there are no set screws or bolts on it. If you do not have compression tooling on the truck, a bolted or set-screw splice block is the alternative for that joint.
6) Is the Blackburn C 1500 sold individually or in a bag of multiples?
Sold each, so the quantity you order is the number of barrels you get. Plan one per splice point and remember each one still needs its own insulation.
7) Is the Blackburn C 1500 splice made in the USA? We have domestic sourcing requirements on public work.
Country of origin on the C 1500 is the United States, which is what a government or institutional buyer with domestic-content language in the contract needs on the submittal.
8) Why tin plating on a copper splice, and does it matter in a wet location?
The tin plate on the C 1500 barrel slows oxidation of the copper, which helps in damp pull boxes, handholes, and underground vaults where a bare copper surface would dull. It does not make the splice waterproof on its own, so a wet or buried joint still needs a suitable insulating and sealing system over the crimped barrel.
9) What is the exact part number to order this Blackburn straight splice?
Blackburn C 1500 is the manufacturer part number, a copper tin-plated straight long-barrel compression splice. That is the designation to put on a purchase order or hand to a counter.
