Blackburn SAC 250 TN – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What conductor size does the Blackburn SAC 250 TN splice take?
The SAC 250 TN is sized for 250 kcmil aluminum conductor, which is what the 250 in the part number refers to. It is a two-conductor straight splice, so it joins one 250 kcmil run to another end to end. Ordering for a different cable size means a different number in the series, not a different die on this same barrel.
2) Is the SAC 250 TN a compression splice or a mechanical set-screw splice?
Compression. It installs with a hydraulic or battery crimp tool and the correct die, not with set screws, so once it's crimped it isn't reusable or re-tensionable. If you need a connection you can take apart or install without a crimper, you want a mechanical set-screw splice instead.
3) Can I use this aluminum splice on copper conductor, or is it aluminum only?
The barrel is aluminum and tin plated, which is the standard construction for an AL/CU dual rated compression splice, but the only conductor material named for the SAC 250 TN is aluminum. Tin plating is there to keep the aluminum body from galvanic attack and to protect the crimp surface. For a straight copper-to-copper 250 kcmil splice, order a copper compression sleeve rather than this aluminum body.
4) Does the SAC 250 TN come insulated, or do I have to tape or heat shrink it?
It ships bare with no insulation on the barrel, so the installer covers it. On a 250 kcmil splice that normally means heat shrink tubing sized over the finished crimp, or a cold shrink sleeve, or a taped build-up back to the cable insulation level. Order the covering separately, it is not in the box.
5) How long is the splice barrel, and will it fit inside my pull box or gutter?
4 inches long overall. Add the bend radius of 250 kcmil cable on both sides before you commit to a shallow box, and remember the finished crimp needs a heat shrink sleeve over it, which adds a little length again. In a tight junction box the 4 inch barrel plus insulation build-up is usually the constraint, not the cable.
6) Does this splice meet ANSI C119.4 for underground and submersible use?
The SAC 250 TN is built to ANSI C119.4, the standard covering connectors for use between aluminum and copper conductors. The class and category within that standard determine whether a given connector is rated for submersion, so for direct-burial or wet-vault work confirm the class marking on the connector body against your spec.
7) Is the SAC 250 TN sold individually or in a box of multiples?
Sold each, so a quantity of one is one splice. On a three phase plus neutral feeder splice you are ordering four, and it is worth adding a spare since a miscrimped compression barrel is scrap.
8) Where is the Blackburn SAC 250 TN made? We have domestic sourcing requirements.
Country of origin is the United States, which matters on federally funded and Buy American jobs where connectors and fittings fall inside the domestic content calculation.
