Basics of Electromagnetic Locks

What it is

Electromechanical locks, commonly known as magnetic locks or mag locks, are a vital component in modern security systems. They offer a reliable and secure method for controlling access to various types of openings.

How it works

Magnetic locks consist of two main components: an armature plate and a coil assembly. When an electric current passes through the coil, it creates a magnetic field that secures the door by bonding with the armature plate. These locks are typically fail-safe, meaning that in the event of a power outage, the door will unlock automatically.

Ideal Applications

Electromechanical locks are versatile and suitable for various applications, including:

  • Single standalone doors
  • Doors requiring basic or cost-effective access control
  • Glass doors needing electronic access control
  • Emergency exits where controlled egress is necessary

Installation

These locks are known for their straightforward installation process, often involving minimal alterations to the door frame. Typically, only a few holes need to be drilled, making the process less invasive and time-consuming.

Special Features/Functionality

Some advanced features of electromechanical locks include:

  • Delayed egress options
  • Magnetic Bond Sensor (MBS) to monitor the security of the lock
  • Interlock capabilities for controlling multiple doors
  • Adjustable relock time delays
