Gardner Bender MPS-2080 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size cable does the Gardner Bender CableBoss MPS-2080 staple hold?
The CableBoss MPS-2080 is a 5/16 inch staple, sized for standard electrical cables and small wire bundles. The 5/16 inch dimension is the staple width, so the cable or bundle has to pass under that span. Anything larger than 5/16 inch across, like stacked NM runs or larger jacketed feeders, needs a wider staple.
2) Do CableBoss MPS-2080 staples need a special tool, or will a regular staple gun drive them?
They are made to be driven with a standard staple gun rather than set by hand with a hammer. That is the point of the CableBoss format: you load them and shoot them, which is a lot quicker than hand-nailing individual insulated staples on a long cable run.
3) Are Gardner Bender CableBoss staples insulated so they won't cut into cable jacket?
The MPS-2080 uses combined plastic and metal construction. The metal gives the staple its holding power into the stud, and the plastic sits against the cable so the fastener is not bearing steel directly on the jacket. That is what makes them appropriate for electrical cable rather than a bare wire staple.
4) How many staples come in a pack of Gardner Bender MPS-2080?
250 staples per pack, in blue. For a crew stapling NM cable through a house or a commercial tenant fit-out, one box covers a substantial amount of run before you are back at the truck. The package itself measures 3.8 x 3.1 x 1.6 inches and weighs 6.2 ounces, so it drops into a pouch easily.
5) What is the exact part number to order Gardner Bender blue cable staples?
Order Gardner Bender MPS-2080. That is the 5/16 inch blue CableBoss staple in the 250 count pack. Gardner Bender sizes the CableBoss line by staple width, so the 5/16 inch call-out is what separates this one from the adjacent sizes in the family.
6) Can these blue cable staples be used for low voltage and data cabling, or only for power?
Both. Gardner Bender lists the MPS-2080 for residential and commercial electrical work as well as telecommunications cabling and data center infrastructure. The plastic-over-metal design is what makes it safe on a jacketed low voltage run, not just on NM.
7) Why are these cable staples blue instead of plain?
Color is a jobsite aid rather than a spec. The blue finish on the MPS-2080 makes a stapled run easy to pick out on a wall inspection or a punch walk, and it lets a foreman tell at a glance which size was used where when more than one staple size is on the job.
