Metallics SHB12214PL – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the SHB12214PL bolt come with nuts or washers?
No. The SHB12214PL is supplied as bolts only, 50 to the box. You'll need to order 1/2-13 nuts and 1/2 inch washers separately to complete the assembly.
2) Is a plain finish square head bolt OK for outdoor or damp locations?
Plain means bare steel with no protective coating, so it is intended for dry interior use. Bare steel will rust in wet, outdoor, or washdown locations, so for those openings specify a zinc plated or hot dip galvanized 1/2-13 x 2-1/4 bolt instead.
3) How many bolts come in a box of SHB12214PL?
Fifty pieces per box. If you're bolting up strut, beam clamps, or channel runs and need a few hundred, order in multiples of 50 rather than counting individual bolts.
4) Why use a square head bolt instead of a hex head bolt?
The square head gives you a larger wrenching surface and, more usefully on electrical work, it seats and holds against a flat or inside a channel where a hex would spin. Many strut fittings, beam clamps, and older switchgear and transformer hardware are prepped for square heads. If your fitting is prepped for hex, use a hex bolt instead, the thread is the same 1/2-13 either way.
5) What is the Metallics part number for the 1/2-13 x 2-1/4 plain square head bolt?
SHB12214PL is the Metallics manufacturer part number, and it is how the item is ordered and stocked. The number breaks down as square head bolt, 1/2 diameter, 2-1/4 length, plain.
