Metallics JG9HC3 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread size and length is the Metallics JG9HC3 hex cap screw?
The JG9HC3 is a 1/4-20 x 1 inch hex cap screw. That's a 1/4 inch diameter with 20 threads per inch (standard UNC coarse thread for that diameter) and a 1 inch shank length under the head, so it mates with any 1/4-20 nut or tapped hole.
2) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JG9HC3?
Each jar holds 25 of the 1/4-20 x 1 inch Grade 9 hex cap screws. Metallics ships this item in jar pack, which is the handy count for a service van or a shop bin rather than a bulk box.
3) What does Grade 9 mean on a hex cap screw, and is it stronger than Grade 8?
Grade 9 is a higher strength class than Grade 8 in the inch fastener system, so the JG9HC3 is specified where a Grade 5 or Grade 8 bolt is being pushed near its limit, typically structural or high vibration connections. If a drawing calls for Grade 5 or Grade 8 at 1/4-20 x 1, this exceeds that requirement; if it calls specifically for Grade 9, substituting down is not acceptable.
4) Can I use the Metallics JG9HC3 bolt for electrical strut, enclosure and equipment mounting?
Yes. The JG9HC3 is part of Metallics' electrical fastener line, and a 1/4-20 x 1 inch hex cap screw is the common size for mounting enclosures, brackets and hardware to tapped holes or strut channel nuts. Pair it with a 1/4-20 strut nut or standard 1/4-20 hex nut; nuts and washers are not included with the jar.
5) What is the Metallics part number to order for the 1/4-20 x 1 Grade 9 hex cap screw jar?
Order Metallics JG9HC3. That number covers the 1/4-20 x 1 inch Grade 9 hex cap screw supplied 25 to a jar.
