Metallics SBH996 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the SBH996 bolt stainless steel, and which grade?
It is 316 stainless. Type 316 carries molybdenum, which is why it is the usual pick over 304 for coastal, marine, wastewater, and chemically exposed installs where chloride pitting is the concern.
2) How many bolts come in a pack of Metallics SBH996?
SBH996 is packaged 10 pieces per pack. Order quantity is in packs of 10 bolts, so a job needing 40 fasteners takes four packs. Nuts and washers are separate items.
3) Will a 316 stainless bolt corrode if I bolt it to galvanized or aluminum strut?
Stainless against galvanized steel or aluminum is a dissimilar-metal pairing, and in wet or salt air the less noble metal (the zinc or aluminum) sacrifices first. For outdoor and washdown work most specs still accept it, but use stainless washers and an isolating washer or anti-seize where the environment is aggressive. The 316 alloy on the SBH996 is the corrosion-resistant side of that pair, not the one at risk.
4) Do I need a separate nut and washer with the SBH996 hex bolt?
Yes. SBH996 ships as bolts only, 10 to a pack. Add 5/16-18 hex nuts and 5/16 flat or lock washers to complete the assembly, and keep them in 316 stainless too if the reason you picked this bolt was the corrosion environment.
