Metallics JG5HC12 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread does the Metallics JG5HC12 hex bolt take, and will it thread into a standard 1/2 inch nut?
It is a 1/2-13 bolt, meaning a 1/2 inch nominal diameter with 13 threads per inch, which is standard UNC coarse thread. Any 1/2-13 coarse nut or tapped hole will take it. Measured shank outside diameter runs 0.4930 to 0.5000 inch, and the threads are made to ASME B18.2.1-2012.
2) Is a grade 5 bolt strong enough to mount a motor, or do I need grade 8?
Grade 5 is the normal choice for motor mounting and general machinery work, and that is exactly what this bolt is made for. It is medium carbon steel, heat treated, with 105,000 psi minimum tensile and yield strength and a hardness of Rockwell C19-30. Go to grade 8 only when the drawing or the equipment manufacturer calls for it; for routine motor-to-base, truck, and automotive repair fastening, grade 5 is the spec.
3) Does this Metallics grade 5 hex bolt qualify for a Buy American or ARRA funded job?
No. The JG5HC12 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and its country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project has domestic sourcing requirements written into the contract, this bolt will not satisfy them and you need a domestically manufactured fastener.
4) Will a zinc plated grade 5 bolt hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The JG5HC12 is steel with a zinc finish, which handles indoor mechanical rooms, equipment rooms and sheltered exterior work. Zinc plating is a sacrificial coating, not stainless, so in constant wet, coastal, or chemically aggressive locations it will eventually surface rust. For those openings specify a hot dip galvanized or stainless fastener instead.
5) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JG5HC12, and can I buy just a few?
These ship 50 pieces in a jar, and 50 each is the order minimum, so the jar is the smallest unit. The jar packaging is what keeps a single size separated on a service truck or a parts shelf rather than loose in a bin.
6) Is this the right bolt for electrical and HVAC equipment mounting, or is it an automotive fastener?
Both, really. Metallics lists the field application as the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning industries, and the same bolt is widely used for mounting motors to machinery and in automotive and truck repair. It is a general purpose grade 5 cap screw, not a trade-specific part.
7) What steel is the Metallics G5HC series hex bolt made from?
The G5HC and JG5HC series bolts are carbon steel in the AISI 1008 to 1026 range, heat treated to grade 5 properties, finishing at Rockwell C19-30 hardness. That is a standard medium carbon grade 5 cap screw, so it drills, taps and torques like any other grade 5 you have used.
8) I need a different length or a larger quantity of this 1/2-13 grade 5 hex bolt. Is that available?
Yes. The G5HC and JG5HC series covers other diameters, lengths and pack quantities beyond the 1/2-13 x 2-1/4 jar of 50, available by request. Give the diameter, thread, length and the count you need and it can be quoted from the same series.
