1) Will a 1/4 x 3 stainless lag bolt hold up outdoors or in a wet/coastal location?
The Metallics JBLS4SS lag bolt is 18-8 stainless steel, which gives it better corrosion resistance than galvanized steel lag bolts. That makes it the choice for exterior mounting, damp mechanical rooms, pool and wash-down areas, and coastal jobs where a zinc-plated or hot-dip bolt would eventually bleed rust down the surface.
2) What size pilot hole do I need for a 1/4 inch stainless lag bolt?
Size the pilot off the shank, not the thread. The JBLS4SS measures 0.237 to 0.260 inch outside diameter with 10 threads per inch and a right-hand gimlet point, so in softwood a 5/32 inch pilot is typical and in dense hardwood you go up toward 3/16 inch so the stainless head doesn't snap on drive-in. Stainless galls more readily than plated steel, so drill the full depth of the 3 inch length and drive slowly.
3) Is this stainless lag bolt strong enough for hanging conduit, strut and unistrut trapeze supports?
It is built for that work. The 18-8 stainless JBLS4SS runs roughly 100,000 to 125,000 psi minimum tensile and Rockwell B95-C32 hardness, and Metallics lists the line for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades, which is exactly conduit hangers, strut, pipe clamps and equipment straps into wood framing. Load capacity on a lag is governed by the wood and the embedment, so with a 3 inch bolt make sure you're getting real thread penetration into solid framing and not just sheathing.
4) Will this lag bolt meet a Buy American or ARRA requirement on a federal or public project?
No. The Metallics JBLS4SS is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. If your spec carries a domestic sourcing clause, this bolt will not satisfy it and you need a domestically produced lag.
5) How many lag bolts come in a jar and can I buy just a few?
The JBLS4SS ships as a jar of 100, and 100 (one jar) is the order minimum. There is no loose or count-out option on this item. Metallics does make other sizes and quantities in the BLS/JBLS lag bolt line available by request.
6) Do I need washers with these stainless lag bolts, and are any included?
The jar contains lag bolts only. Metallics lists a 0.094 in. washer OD figure against the item, but no washers ship in the jar, so order flat washers separately if you're bearing on wood, strut or a soft-faced material. Match them in 18-8 stainless too, since pairing a plated steel washer with a stainless bolt in a wet location sets up galvanic corrosion at the joint.
7) Can I use a lag bolt like this in concrete or masonry?
Not on its own. A lag bolt has spaced threads and a gimlet point made to cut into wood, so it needs either solid wood framing or a lead/plastic masonry shield set into the concrete. Drive it straight into a drilled concrete hole with no anchor and it will strip out. For concrete you want a wedge or sleeve anchor rated for the base material instead.
