Metallics JBBH86 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the JBBH86 bolt stainless or bronze, and will it corrode outdoors?
Silicon bronze, not stainless, with a bronze finish, manufactured to ASTM F468 (the standard covering nonferrous bolts for general use). Silicon bronze is chosen for wet and marine-type exposure and for grounding and bonding work where you want to avoid galvanic problems against copper. If you need the bolt to match copper grounding conductors or copper water piping, bronze is the right material; if you need a high-strength structural bolt, this is not it.
2) Does the Metallics JBBH86 bolt meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a federal job?
No. The JBBH86 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant; country of origin is listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, this bolt will not satisfy it and you'll need a domestically produced silicon bronze fastener instead.
3) Why would an electrician use a silicon bronze bolt instead of a plated steel one?
Metallics lists the BBH/JBBH hex bolts for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades. In those applications the draw is the silicon bronze body: it holds up in damp and buried locations and sits close to copper on the galvanic scale, which is why bronze hardware shows up on ground plates, bonding lugs and copper pipe supports. A zinc-plated steel bolt in contact with copper in a wet location corrodes first.
4) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JBBH86, and can I buy fewer?
The JBBH86 ships as a jar of 50 bolts, and 50 each is the order minimum, so the jar is the smallest unit you can take. The JBBH prefix is the jar-packed version of the BBH series. Metallics notes other sizes and quantities are available by request if 3/4-10 x 1-1/2 or the 50-count isn't what your job needs.
5) How thick a connection will a 1-1/2 inch long 3/4-10 bolt actually clamp?
Grip length is the 1-1/2 inch shank less whatever the nut and washers take up, so plan on clamping roughly an inch of material with a 3/4-10 nut and a flat washer each side. For thicker buss bars, ground plate stacks or timber-to-metal connections, step up to a longer length in the same BBH/JBBH series rather than running the nut onto partial thread.
6) Are nuts and washers included with the JBBH86 bolts?
No. The jar contains 50 hex bolts only. You'll need to order 3/4-10 nuts and 3/4 inch washers separately, and for a bronze installation match them in silicon bronze so you don't reintroduce a dissimilar metal at the joint.
