Metallics HTB45M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics HTB45M hex tap bolt threaded all the way to the head?
Yes. A hex tap bolt is fully threaded from the point right up under the hex head, which is what separates it from a standard hex cap screw with a plain shoulder. On the HTB45M that means the full 1 inch of length is usable thread at 16 threads per inch, so it can be run into a tapped hole, a strut nut, or a threaded insert to whatever depth the hole allows.
2) How strong is the Metallics HTB45M zinc steel tap bolt, and is it a graded bolt?
It is a commercial low-carbon steel bolt rated at 60,000 psi minimum tensile strength with a hardness of Rockwell B69 to B100. That is general-purpose strength for electrical supports, strut, hangers, and equipment mounting, not a high-strength structural bolt. If your drawing calls out a specific SAE grade for a structural or seismic connection, specify a graded bolt instead of this one.
3) Is the HTB45M sold individually or only by the box?
It ships as a box of 1,000 pieces, and 1,000 is the order minimum. Total shipping weight for the box is 41.2 lbs. If you need a smaller count or a different length or diameter in the same hex tap bolt series, other sizes and quantities are available by request.
4) Will a 3/8-16 bolt thread into a standard 3/8-16 strut nut or tapped hole?
Yes, as long as the mating part is 3/8-16. The HTB45M is cut to 16 threads per inch to IFI-199 (2014), the standard thread spec, so it mates with any conforming 3/8-16 channel nut, weld nut, insert, or tapped plate. Note that 3/8-16 is a coarse pitch, so it will not engage a 3/8-24 fine-thread nut.
5) Is 1 inch of bolt long enough for my connection?
The HTB45M gives you 1 inch of fully threaded length under the head. Subtract the thickness of the bracket, clamp, or hanger you are bolting through, plus any washer, and what is left is your thread engagement into the nut or tapped hole. A common rule of thumb is engagement at least equal to the bolt diameter, so about 3/8 inch minimum here. If your stack-up leaves less than that, order a longer length from the same hex tap bolt series.
6) Can the HTB45M be used outdoors or in a damp location?
The bolt is steel with a zinc finish, which handles indoor and normally dry or occasionally damp conditions. For wet, coastal, chemical, or washdown exposure, zinc-plated steel will eventually corrode; go to the 18-8 stainless version of the Metallics hex tap bolt line instead.
7) Does the Metallics HTB45M meet Buy American or ARRA requirements on a federal job?
The HTB45M is flagged as both Buy American compliant and ARRA compliant in the manufacturer data, with China listed as the country of origin. On federally funded work, give both facts to the specifying authority, since some agency clauses judge compliance on origin rather than the manufacturer's own designation.
8) Do the HTB45M bolts come with nuts and washers?
No. The box contains 1,000 hex tap bolts only. Nuts, flat washers, lock washers, and any channel or spring nuts have to be ordered separately in 3/8-16 to match.
