Metallics JBLS22G – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 3/8 x 2-1/2 galvanized lag bolt hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
That is what the galvanized finish on the Metallics JBLS22G lag bolt is for. It's a steel lag screw with a zinc galvanized coating, called out for use in corrosive environments, so exterior framing, damp vaults and wet mechanical spaces are the intended service. For submerged or chemically aggressive duty, stainless is the better call.
2) What size pilot hole do I drill for a 3/8 inch Metallics lag bolt?
Size the pilot to the shank, not the thread. The JBLS22G measures 0.360 to 0.388 inch outside diameter over the threads with 7 threads per inch, so in solid softwood a 1/4 inch pilot is the usual starting point and hardwood runs closer to 5/16 inch. The gimlet point lets it start in the hole without a lead-in taper.
3) Is this a lag screw or a through bolt with a nut?
It's a lag, not a machine bolt. The JBLS22G is a full-bodied hex head lag bolt with spaced threads and a gimlet point, so it threads directly into wood or a wood-backed substrate and needs no nut on the back side. If you need to clamp two members with access to both faces, use a hex cap screw or carriage bolt with a nut instead.
4) Does this Metallics lag bolt meet a recognized dimensional standard for spec submittals?
Yes. The bolt is made to ASME B18.2.1-1996 for dimensions, with steel per AISI 1006 to 1022, 60,000 psi minimum tensile strength and Rockwell B70 to B100 hardness. Those four values are what an inspector or submittal reviewer usually wants on a lag fastener.
5) Are these lag bolts Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JBLS22G is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with origin listed as multiple countries. On a federally funded project with domestic sourcing requirements you'll need a domestically produced lag instead.
6) How many lag bolts come in a jar of Metallics JBLS22G?
Fifty bolts per jar, and 50 each is the order minimum, so you buy it by the full jar rather than loose count. The jar keeps them together in a gang box instead of loose in a pouch.
7) Can I use these lag bolts for hanging pipe and conduit supports?
That's the intended use. Metallics lists these lags for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades, so strut, conduit straps, trapeze supports and pipe hangers fastened into wood joists or blocking are standard applications. The galvanized coating suits unheated or exterior runs.
8) Can I get this Metallics lag bolt in other lengths or diameters?
Yes. The BLS and JBLS series covers other sizes and quantities by request; the JBLS22G itself is the 3/8 by 2-1/2 inch galvanized version in a 50 piece jar. If you need a longer lag to reach past sheathing into framing, ask for the same series in the length you need.
9) Is the thread right hand, and do I need a washer under the head?
Right hand thread, so it drives clockwise with a standard socket or impact driver. A washer is not supplied, and with a hex head bearing directly on wood most installers add a flat washer to spread the load; Metallics lists a 0.125 in washer OD figure with this series. For strut and metal straps the hex head seats fine on its own.
