Metallics JBBH56 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread does the Metallics JBBH56 hex bolt take, and will it fit a standard 5/16 nut?
It's a 5/16-18 thread, 18 threads per inch, cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1. That's the standard 5/16 coarse (UNC) series, so any 5/16-18 nut or tapped hole mates with it. Bolt length is 2-1/4 inches.
2) Is the JBBH56 bolt actually bronze all the way through, or just bronze plated?
Solid silicon bronze, not a plating. The finish reads bronze because that is the base metal, and the material conforms to ASTM F468 (the standard covering nonferrous bolts and studs for general use). That's why it gets specified in wet, marine, and corrosive locations where a zinc-plated steel bolt would rust out.
3) Will a 5/16-18 silicon bronze hex bolt corrode if I bolt it to copper or bronze grounding hardware?
Silicon bronze is the usual choice precisely to avoid that problem. Bolting bronze to copper or bronze keeps the metals close on the galvanic scale, so you don't get the dissimilar-metal attack you'd see pairing steel or aluminum hardware with copper. Metallics lists these for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work, which is where that pairing comes up most.
4) Can I use the Metallics JBBH56 on a federally funded job with Buy American requirements?
No. The JBBH56 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, this part won't satisfy it and you'll need a domestically produced silicon bronze bolt instead.
5) What size wrench or socket do I need for the JBBH56 hex head?
Head width across flats runs 0.489 to 0.500 inch, so a 1/2 inch wrench or socket fits. Head height is 0.195 to 0.211 inch. Those dimensions follow ASME B18.2.1, the standard hex bolt dimensional spec, so it drops into any clearance sized for a standard 5/16 hex bolt.
6) How is the JBBH56 packaged, and is there a minimum I have to buy?
It ships as a jar of 100 bolts, and the jar is the minimum order unit, one jar of 100. Shipping weight on the jar is 5.32 lbs. Metallics does make other sizes and quantities available by request if 2-1/4 inch length or a 100 count doesn't suit the job.
7) Do the nuts and washers come with these bronze hex bolts?
No. The JBBH56 is bolts only, 100 hex bolts in a jar. You'll need to order matching 5/16-18 silicon bronze nuts and bronze washers separately if you want to keep the whole joint in the same metal, which is the point of using bronze in the first place.
