Use it when you need to thread into a tapped hole or a channel nut and want engagement along the whole 3 inch length. Threads are right hand, 18 per inch on a 5/16 diameter.
2) Will a zinc plated steel tap bolt like this hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The JHTB55 is steel with a zinc finish, which is a dry-interior and light-exposure plating. It is fine in mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, and covered areas, but zinc will eventually corrode in wet exterior, coastal, or washdown service. For those, go to the stainless version of the same hex tap bolt family (Metallics carries 18-8 stainless hex tap bolts under the JSHTB prefix).
