Metallics JBRHC101 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are these bolts solid brass or just brass plated?
Solid brass. The material is listed as brass and the head color as brass, not a plating over steel. That's why electricians reach for them for grounding and bonding connections, where you want the fastener metal to match the conductor and resist corrosion rather than rust through.
2) What wrench or socket size fits these 5/16-18 brass hex bolts?
Across the flats the hex head measures 0.489 to 0.500 inch, so a 1/2 inch wrench or socket is the one you want. Head height is 13/64 inch, with 0.14 inch of wrenching height, so keep the socket walls thin if you're working in a tight box.
3) How many bolts come in a jar and can I buy fewer than 100?
They ship as a jar of 100, and 100 count is the order minimum, so a jar is the smallest buy. Other sizes and quantities can be had by request.
4) Do these brass hex bolts meet Buy American and ARRA requirements for a government job?
Both the Buy American and ARRA fields on the JBRHC101 are flagged C for compliant. Country of origin is China, so if your contract language requires domestic melt and manufacture rather than general trade-agreement compliance, verify the flag against your specific clause before you spec it.
5) Is a 5/8 inch long bolt long enough for a grounding lug or bonding jumper?
At 5/8 inch of overall length there isn't much usable thread once you pass through a lug tongue and a washer, so it suits thin-stack connections: a lug or bonding strap directly into a tapped 5/16-18 hole or a nut right behind the plate. For thicker stacks, deeper enclosure walls, or a bolt-and-nut through a busbar, step up to a longer 5/16-18 brass hex bolt from the same JBRHC series.
6) What is the exact part number to order these brass hex bolts?
Order Metallics JBRHC101. That's the 5/16-18 x 5/8 brass hex bolt in the JBRHC series, jar of 100.
7) How much does a jar of 100 Metallics 5/16-18 brass hex bolts weigh?
The jar comes in at 993 g. Useful if you're palletizing a materials order or working to a shipping weight on a submittal.
