Metallics JBLS14 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 5/16 x 3 inch hex lag bolt hold in pressure-treated or exterior wood?
The Metallics JBLS14 lag bolt is zinc plated steel and specified for use in wood in non-corrosive environments. Zinc plating handles indoor and dry conditions, but it is not the right choice for treated lumber, coastal exposure, or anywhere chemically corrosive. For those openings use a hot-dip galvanized or 18-8 stainless lag of the same 5/16 x 3 inch size instead.
2) Is a 5/16 lag bolt strong enough for hanging unistrut, conduit racks, or HVAC hangers from wood framing?
That is the intended use. The JBLS14 is listed for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades, with 60,000 psi minimum tensile strength and a Rockwell B70 to B100 hardness from AISI 1006 to 1022 steel. The governing limit on a wood application is usually the thread withdrawal in the lumber rather than the bolt itself, so size your embedment to the framing.
3) Does this lag bolt meet a dimensional standard I can put on a submittal?
Dimensions conform to ASME B18.2.1-1996, and the material is AISI 1006 to 1022 steel with 60,000 psi minimum tensile. Threads are right hand. Note for government or federally funded work that the JBLS14 is not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple.
4) Can I use the JBLS14 lag bolt in concrete, block, or metal studs?
No. It is a wood fastener with spaced threads and a gimlet point, and those threads need wood fiber to bite. Concrete or block calls for a sleeve or wedge anchor, or a lag shield that the 5/16 lag can then thread into. Sheet metal and metal studs call for a self-drilling screw, not a lag.
5) What wrench or socket size fits the hex head on the Metallics JBLS14 lag bolt?
Head width across flats runs 0.484 to 0.500 inch, which is a 1/2 inch socket or wrench. Drive it with a socket and ratchet or an impact with a 1/2 inch hex driver; lags are not slotted for a screwdriver.
6) How many lag bolts come in a jar of Metallics JBLS14, and can I order a smaller quantity?
These ship as a jar of 100 pieces, and 100 in the jar is the order minimum. Other sizes and quantities in the BLS and JBLS lag bolt series are available by request if a job needs a different length, diameter, or pack.
7) Do I need washers with these lag bolts, or are they included?
The jar contains lag bolts only, no washers. Running a flat washer under the hex head is normal practice when you are clamping strut, a hanger, or a bracket to wood, since it spreads the bearing load and keeps the head from crushing into the surface. Order washers sized to a 5/16 inch bolt separately.
8) How much does a jar of 100 Metallics 5/16 x 3 lag bolts weigh for shipping?
A jar of 100 comes in at 5.59 lbs. Useful if you are staging a quantity of jars on a cart or estimating a bulk order for a multi-family rough-in.
