Metallics JBBH82 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread size and length is the Metallics JBBH82 hex bolt?
The JBBH82 is a 5/8-11 x 1-1/2 inch hex bolt, so it is 5/8 inch diameter with 11 threads per inch (coarse UNC) and a 1-1/2 inch shank under the head. Threads are cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1, so they mate with any standard 5/8-11 nut or tapped hole.
2) Is the Metallics JBBH82 bolt solid bronze or just bronze plated?
Solid silicon bronze throughout, not a plating. The bronze appearance is the base metal, which is why it holds up in wet and corrosive service where a plated steel bolt would rust out once the coating is scratched. It is made to ASTM F468, the standard covering nonferrous bolts for general use.
3) Why use a silicon bronze hex bolt instead of galvanized steel on an electrical ground connection?
Silicon bronze is the usual choice where the bolt is in contact with copper or bronze grounding hardware. It is conductive, corrosion resistant, and avoids the galvanic mismatch you get pairing steel with copper busbar, ground plates, or water pipe clamps. Metallics lists the BBH and JBBH bolts for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work for exactly that reason. If the joint is plain structural steel and never sees moisture or copper, a plated steel bolt does the same job.
4) Do Metallics JBBH82 bronze bolts meet Buy American requirements on a federal job?
No. The JBBH82 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your spec carries a domestic sourcing clause, this part will not satisfy it.
5) Will the JBBH82 hex bolt interchange with a standard hex cap screw on my drawing?
Dimensionally yes. The bolt is made to ASME B18.2.1, the dimensional standard for square and hex bolts and screws, so head size, head height and thread run match a standard hex bolt of the same 5/8-11 x 1-1/2 size. What differs is the metal: this one is silicon bronze, not steel, so strength values are not the same as a Grade 5 or Grade 8 steel bolt and you should not substitute it into a structural connection calling for a graded steel fastener.
6) Will a standard 15/16 inch wrench or socket fit this 5/8-11 hex bolt?
Yes. The head measures 0.922 to 0.938 inches across the flats, which is the 15/16 inch hex a 5/8-11 bolt normally takes. Head height runs 0.378 to 0.403 inches, worth checking if you are working in a tight recess or under a channel strut.
7) Does the Metallics JBBH82 come with nuts and washers?
No. The JBBH82 is bolts only, 100 hex bolts packed in a jar. Nuts and washers are ordered separately, and on a bronze connection you will usually want matching silicon bronze nuts and washers rather than steel so the whole joint stays galvanically compatible.
8) How are these Metallics bronze hex bolts packaged, and what is the minimum I can buy?
They ship in a jar of 100 bolts, and the jar is the order minimum, so the smallest purchase is one jar of 100. The packed jar weighs 18.43 lbs. Metallics does make other sizes and quantities in the BBH and JBBH line available by request.
9) How much grip length do I get with a 1-1/2 inch bronze hex bolt?
At 1-1/2 inches under the head, the JBBH82 suits clamped thicknesses of roughly an inch once you allow for a nut and washers. It is a short bolt for things like ground plate and busbar connections, pipe clamps, and strut hardware. For thicker stacks you want a longer length out of the same BBH and JBBH bronze hex bolt line.
