Metallics JG5HC75 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is a Grade 5 bolt strong enough for mounting a motor to a machine base?
That is the application these are built for. The JG5HC75 is a medium carbon steel cap screw, heat treated, with 105,000 psi minimum tensile and yield strength and a hardness of Rockwell C19-30. Motor mounting to machinery is the stated use, along with automotive and truck repair work. If your drawing calls for Grade 8, this is not a substitute.
2) Will a 5/8-11 bolt thread into my existing nuts and tapped holes?
It is 11 threads per inch, which is standard 5/8 inch UNC coarse thread, made to ASME B18.2.1-2012. Any 5/8-11 nut, coupling, or tapped hole will take it. The shank outside diameter runs 0.6170 to 0.6250 inch, so plan on a 11/16 inch clearance hole for a through-bolted connection.
3) Do these Metallics hex bolts meet Buy American or ARRA requirements on a federal job?
No. The JG5HC75 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your contract carries domestic sourcing language, these will not satisfy it and you need a domestic Grade 5 bolt instead.
4) What size wrench or socket do I need for a 5/8-11 Grade 5 hex bolt?
The Metallics JG5HC75 hex bolt has an across-flats head width of 0.922 to 0.938 inch, which is a 15/16 inch wrench or socket. Head height is 25/64 inch, with a wrenching height of 0.269 inch, so a standard depth socket seats fine on it.
5) How much grip length do I get out of a 5 inch bolt?
Overall length is 5 inches measured under the head. Subtract your total material stack plus washers and the nut height to see what thread is left engaged. On a 5 inch Grade 5 hex bolt the shank is partially threaded, so if your stack is thin the unthreaded body may reach into the nut. Step down in length rather than stacking washers to fix that.
6) Is zinc plating on these bolts OK for outdoor or damp locations?
The finish is zinc, specifically zinc chromate over the steel, which handles indoor and sheltered mechanical rooms well. For sustained outdoor exposure, washdown areas, or anything near salt, zinc plating will eventually rust and hot dip galvanized or stainless is the better call.
7) How many bolts come in a jar and can I buy just a few?
These ship 25 to a jar, and 25 each is the order minimum, so a jar is the smallest buy. Metallics also lists other sizes and quantities in the G5HC and JG5HC series by request if 5/8-11 x 5 is not the length you need.
8) What is the steel in a Metallics Grade 5 hex bolt made to?
Material standard is AISI 1008 to 1026 steel, heat treated to Grade 5 properties, landing at Rockwell C19-30. That is the medium carbon range you would expect on a Grade 5 cap screw rather than a low-grade commercial bolt.
9) Why is a hex bolt listed under electrical supplies, and is it the same bolt a mechanical trade would use?
It is a general purpose Grade 5 hex cap screw. Metallics stocks it for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades, where it gets used for strut and equipment anchoring, motor mounting, and similar structural attachment. Nothing about it is electrical-specific, so a mechanical contractor can use the same bolt.
