Metallics JMHTB1020 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics JMHTB1020 an M10 x 1.5 coarse thread bolt?
Yes. The JMHTB1020 is an M10 bolt with a 1.5 mm thread pitch, which is the standard coarse metric pitch for M10, and the thread is right hand. Length under the head is 20 mm. If your tapped hole or nut is a fine-pitch M10 x 1.25, this bolt will not thread into it.
2) Is this hex bolt threaded all the way to the head, or does it have a plain shank?
Threads run the full length, right up to directly beneath the head. That is what makes it a tap bolt rather than a standard hex cap screw with a grip length, and it is why it works for shallow tapped holes where a partially threaded bolt would bottom out on its unthreaded shank. There is also a washer face beneath the hex head.
3) What does grade 8.8 mean for strength on this metric bolt?
Class 8.8 is the medium carbon, heat treated grade used for most structural and machinery bolting. On the JMHTB1020 that works out to 120,350 psi minimum tensile strength and 95,700 psi minimum yield, with a hardness of Rockwell C23-34. If your spec calls for class 10.9 or a higher clamp load, this is not a substitute.
4) Is zinc plated steel good enough for outdoor or damp mechanical room use?
The bolt is steel with a zinc finish, which handles indoor mechanical rooms, equipment mounting and general interior service. Zinc plating is a sacrificial coating, not stainless, so in exterior, washdown or coastal exposure it will eventually rust at scratches and cut edges. For sustained wet or corrosive duty, specify stainless or hot dip galvanized instead.
5) Can I use this bolt on a Buy American or ARRA funded project?
No. The JMHTB1020 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. On federally funded work with domestic sourcing requirements you will need a domestically produced fastener instead.
6) Do I need to order nuts and washers separately for these hex tap bolts?
Yes, the jar contains bolts only. The head has an integral washer face, so a flat washer under the head is optional for bearing on steel, but any nut, flat washer or lock washer for a through-bolted joint has to be ordered separately. Match nuts to M10 x 1.5 coarse thread and to class 8 or higher so the nut is not the weak point on this grade 8.8 bolt.
7) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JMHTB1020?
Fifty bolts, packed in a jar, and 50 each is the order minimum. Total packed weight is 1,116 g. The jar format suits a service van or a shop bin where you are pulling a handful at a time rather than ordering per piece for a single job.
8) What are these M10 tap bolts typically used for?
Motor-to-machinery mounting is the common one, where the bolt threads into a tapped base or bracket. They are also used in automotive and truck repair, and across electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work for equipment anchoring and strut or bracket attachment.
9) I need a different length or diameter in this hex tap bolt. Is that available?
The MHTB and JMHTB series covers other sizes and quantities by request, so if you need a longer M10 or a different diameter in the same zinc plated grade 8.8 hex tap bolt, ask rather than substituting a partially threaded cap screw. The JMHTB prefix is the jar packaging; MHTB is the same bolt in the series' other pack configurations.
