Metallics JMHTB1245 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics JMHTB1245 bolt threaded all the way up to the head?
Yes, it's a tap bolt, so the thread runs the full 45mm shank right up to beneath the hex head. That means you can use the full depth of a tapped hole or a thick stack of material without worrying about an unthreaded grip length landing in the threads. The head also has a washer face underneath it to bear evenly on the surface.
2) What thread does an M12 x 45 grade 8.8 tap bolt take, and will it go into a standard M12 tapped hole?
The thread is M12 with a 1.75mm pitch, which is standard metric coarse, and it is right hand. Any M12 x 1.75 tapped hole or nut will take it. If your equipment is tapped M12 x 1.25 or 1.5 (fine pitch, common on some automotive components), this bolt will not thread in.
3) How strong is a class 8.8 bolt, and is it enough for mounting a motor to a machine base?
Grade 8.8 is medium carbon steel, heat treated, with a minimum tensile strength of 120,350 psi and minimum yield of 95,700 psi, hardness Rockwell C23-34. That is the common structural-duty metric class and it is what the JMHTB1245 is intended for, including mounting motors to machinery and automotive and truck repair work. For higher preload applications you would step up to class 10.9 or 12.9 instead.
4) Is the zinc plating on these M12 tap bolts okay for outdoor or wet locations?
These are steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating is a sacrificial coating meant for indoor and sheltered service, mechanical rooms, equipment skids, and HVAC and plumbing work. Continuous outdoor exposure, washdown, or coastal air will eventually corrode plated carbon steel, so for those openings use a hot dip galvanized or stainless fastener instead.
5) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JMHTB1245, and can I buy just a few?
It ships as a jar of 50 pieces, and 50 each is the order minimum. There is no loose or break-pack count on this one, so if you only need a handful for a single motor mount you are still buying the full jar. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
6) Do these Metallics tap bolts meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public project?
No. The JMHTB1245 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, this fastener will not satisfy it.
7) Are hex tap bolts or hex cap screws the right choice for bolting equipment into a tapped frame?
A tap bolt is what you want when the fastener threads directly into a tapped hole or when the clamped stack is thick enough that you need thread all the way down. A partially threaded hex cap screw puts an unthreaded shoulder in the grip, which is better for shear across a joint but wastes length in a deep tapped hole. The Metallics M12 x 45 class 8.8 tap bolt is the fully threaded version, with a washer face under the hex head, and it is used for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work as well as motor mounting.
